Hello Ben G, I'm a little confused. You said in the intro that graphics card is not important for photo editing, and you did mention that you do need a graphics card along with the cpu to do rendering. In this case, do I really need a high-end graphics card to do 4k video editing and rendering? The specs of the PC I'm working on a 4k video editing has a Ryzen 7 3800x 8core, 16 threads, 32gb ddr4 rams with 3200Mhz, an ssd drive + a RTX 3080 graphics card and the rendering is still kind of slow for a 3 mins video and it took about 12-15mins to finish the task? Is there something wrong with my system? In this case, do I need a cpu + rams + a gpu upgrade to make the rendering much faster and smoother? If Ben G don't have time to reply, can anyone that would know can give me some feedbacks? Thanks!

Why are you not comparing like for like? You use the GPU to render 7000 odd frames, and presuming 30fps, that's about 4 minutes of video, and then compare it to the CPU rendering the whole 19 minutes. Since you were patient enough to have the slower CPU render the whole project, why not compare it with the GPU rendering the whole project, instead of a short part of it?

I am confused. In another video you said that GPU does not play role in exporting. Then why there is a difference in rendering time? doesnt rendering equal exporting?

I am as of now still using the onboard GPU of my processor in editing videos in 4K. If you have a powerful enough processor, it's not a necessity. Of course there's lags, but the lags are tolerable.

Still though, having a GPU separate from the processor is still better which is why I am saving money to get one soon.

Hey man. Cool content. Very helpful. Can you help me in a specific scenario? I'm working on a budget and want to record my band rehearsals. I'm using 4 cameras in 1080p with an external portable audio recorder (boss br 80 micro br). Very portable and easy setup cause studio hours cost lol. Anyways. I have a kinda primitive PC (Core i7 870 - 16 GB RAM - Quadro 600 GPU). I know, the Quadro sucks (i got this PC in a deal on a very tight budget really). I know that i need to improve the GPU. Can the GTX 1050 ti run a Multicam editing with 4 cameras on 1080p? Thanks

Hi Ben, thank you for all your videos! Really helpful. I have the option of a 1650ti vs a 3080 laptop. I like the 1650ti one and it's less than half the price of the 3080, but my question is, will it handle Premier Pro 4K video editing? For information the 1650 has a i7-10750H and the 3080 has a i7-11800H, one with 16GB the other 32GB RAM. Thanks so much!

I’m looking at upgrading my system and was wondering whether to keep my GTX 980ti but upgrade the rest to an i9 since gpus are crazy expensive right now. I’m not looking to game on it, so basically just want a smooth timeline for Sony A7siii footage. Render times aren’t as important, as currently they’re about real-time with 4k footage which I’m okay with. When I’ve checked the system resources when editing with premiere, the gpu doesn’t seem to be utilised very well when on the timeline, so thinking a CPU upgrade maybe worth it for me. The reason to upgrade is that when viewing with some colour grading at full quality, it can start dropping frames.

Thank you for explaining perfectly how the GPU is utilised during the video editing process. I've recently built a new PC and I'm in the process of researching a graphics card to buy but I don't want to spend a fortune on a high end one. Cheers - Neil (UK).
