When Debussy wrote this suite in 1890 he had just completed the 'Ariettes oubliées', songs to words by Verlaine. During this period (1887-1900) he and Verlaine met regularly at Mallarmé's Tuesday gatherings. This would account for the rather special flavour of this suite which is unmistakably Verlainian in mood. Both the writing and the concept of the musical idiom of the pieces are traditional with an obvious reference to the French harpsichordists in both their titles and their style.
