I believe this idea of a virtual lab is the next step to solving many problems in and outside of the classroom. The video claims to increase the effectiveness of the instructors by connecting virtual stimulation to real life lectures; which will help combat boredom and disengagement in the classroom. Additionally, through both game-based learning, and problem-based learning, students have an outlet to test out their own hypothesis and learn from mistakes in a safe environment. This will help develop solutions to future problems the students relate to more. Furthermore, the virtual lab coupled with real-life practices will aid experiential learning. I believe that this concept will increase intrinsic motivation in students and coupled with flow, and grit.

As a future educator, I believe that this is an incredible way to help increase the minds of the next young science generation. I am studying at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology to become a high school teacher, more specifically to teach general science (grade 9 – 10) and biology (grade 11 – 12). This piece of technology will immensely help engage students, in their ability to learn or want to learn science. It will motivate students to participate and expand their minds. At our University, we focus on how to incorporate technology to help enhance students learning and bring them closer to the truth than ever before. The virtual lab Labster does just that.
By first teaching the students verbally about these different types of real-world lab scenarios then asking them through a problem or project-based learning to carry it out in a gaming process with increase their attention span and elaborate their learning abilities.
Loved watching this TED talk video, and I can’t wait to incorporate different types of technology and programs into my classroom (such as labster) when I enter the school as a professional teacher.

I have used several medical apps on my HTC Vive and with that i know for a fact that this Ted Talk absolutely nails it.

Virtual reality is incredibly immersive, and would greatly enhance the learning experience.

Regarding their metrics of at least doubling the learning effectiveness. I bet there is still a lot more room for that to grow. Simply based off of the fact that i recognize that there is still so much room for growth in terms of the quality of said apps.

Heck the simple fact that i can actually walk around and reach out into these virtual worlds with my HTC Vive controllers, absolutely trumps anything they showed in this video.

What they are also not measuring, is the effectiveness in instilling a passion for science into these students. Though they did mention one thing. The surprise from the students themselves, when they realized they essentially sat in class for 2 hours straight, without once checking facebook. That, is amazing.

But that also truly highlights the issues with our current education system. If something such as the awe-inspiring inner functions of the universe, are not keeping students engaged. Then that's a big problem and the problem definitely does not lie in the students, but in the teachers, and the teaching process.

Sure some students such as myself are lucky enough to be enthralled by science. But again i attribute that to nothing more than luck on my part.

This will revolution the medical field just as much science by allowing Doctors and medical assistants to get hands on training eliminating the need to practice on a patient. Overall; athletes will use this to help visualize up coming games and strategies, entertainment through a screen may no longer be a thing in the next century and teaching in a classroom will go through dynamic shifts due to personal electronics and globally connected media.

The new math word problem becomes a video problem... But one additional point should-not be overlooked: 'virtual-lab'ing will be the way of the real laboratory too, as researchers sitting comfortably outside and controlling their doppelgängerbots doing the real work on the inside, accomplish more and better science faster—or vice versa inside-out on Mars...

What's been happening in education innovation in the past few years isn't as dismal as he makes it sound. It's not really fair to dismiss what Khan Academy does as not revolutionary. They don't just make lecture videos. They're supporting a flipped classroom model that in the end will probably make a greater difference than this new tech, as great as it is. People said TV and radio would revolutionize education, and neither did. You can't just use new mediums and buy better equipment; you need to fundamentally change what teachers and students do together, and move away from in-class lectures. The flipped classroom is a key part of that, and Khan Academy has already been working on it for a while.

sounds like a brilliant way to improve teaching, but as far as innovating, use of a virtual lab would surely be limited, you can't make the equipment do something that hasn't already been done, they need to code the machines, so while students could surely be inspired and better educated which could lead to innovation, they could do with creating a connection between these students and actual real lab facilities.
