There are only 3 canon fallouts: 1,2 and new vegas. The rest is theme park skin set for oblivion and other failures like tactics and bos. Replace mutants with orks, energy weapons with magic, raiders with bandits and NOTHING changes. Theres an outstanding video "no todds no masters" that captures the frustration and explains everything perfectly.

Then you play Fallout: New Vegas with it's goofy 50's gangster villain and 50's Vegas aesthetic and it makes you wonder wth this guy is talking about.

Were you there when they designed this game? This entire video can be disproved by the assertion that maybe, just maybe Bethesda ‘wanted to make the game their own.’ Think about it, when a game doesn’t make changes - creative or otherwise - you’d all be complaining that the game got stagnant. The first Fallout game was nowhere fucking near as popular. I think they took it the right direction honestly.

Honest to god YOU ARE SO RIGHT!
Bethesda treats the howl world as "set pieces" like its some Disneyland attraction you wander in and have a spooky old itme! Giving no thought as to how people actually life in there!
Its not odd to see Mickey next to a Dragon! Its fun! Neither should you wonder about a Skeleton in a womans house or how she even fights of supermutants romaning the world!
Jeeez... thats piss poor world building ! As a fanfic writer and GM ~ I can tell you every novice can do a better job creating a more coherent story. Cudos for pointing it out. Speaking from my heart.

I also enjoy fallout 4, but very true, there are many things wrong with it, thankfully dls's make up for some of it. Recently i replayed nv and even though graphics is outdated, some inventory/management mechanics are a bit weird, building things/upgrades could be done better, overall it is a really well done 3d fallout experience. I wish for Obsidian to do it again at some point.

That's how Beth makes games from the very beginning of the company. Even their flagship TES series suffers the exact same issues - zero understanding of lore and even what made previous games great. Because they don't give a F about their previous games. They'll just lazily retcon everything and fans will figure something out. Which is fine, it sells.

Fallout 4 being my first fallout game ever see to it that I love it and that it is my favorite. I love the individual stories of the characters in that game. But I can see how someone who grew up with the first one would have this view. The points you made are good.

Edit: and yeah, gosh dang the trash thing is what annoyed me the most about 4. Also screw 76.

And you dont understand games man.

People like familarty, you see someone is DJ in apocalypse world? Its funny, you know what it is refering to. If you build real apocalypse world, lots of stuff would be weird and make no sense and people would not like it, sure it might be more realistic but realism is not fun in games. Imagine if you had stomach problems when you eat something weird? Whole video is just there to farm views.

And there is your example of baseball guy in Diamond city, EVERYBODY knows him, some people might hate him but everybody knows him and he is goofball, do you remember store owner in your settlement? That would be more realistic but realistic is boring.

Idk about the monster biodiversity issue. 200 years is a blink of an eye in evolutionary time, and the continental US has a lot of the same species everywhere (in the world we live in now). It makes perfect sense for different games in different locations to have the same species of animals.

You've fought your way into the hospital. You've snuck past super mutants, stealthily killed the feral ghoul wandering the rubble, and leaped across the chasm to a desk with a safe mounted in the wall. You pick the lock. This safe hasn't been opened since before the bombs dropped. What will you find? Booze? Pre-war money? A stimpak, hopefully?
No. You find Raider armor, a pipe pistol, and some Jet.

Lol spent like 20 minutes two weeks ago trying to explain this to a Bethesda Fallout fan, and covered basically all the points you did in a much less articulate way.

Ultimately some of these guys will just never understand unless they put aside their biases and go play the old games. I think New Vegas's similarities to Fallout 3 blind people to how radically differently it treats the setting and core gameplay experience for some reason.

Half these guys dont even understand what theyre missing, and just want well crafted dungeons to go through with whacky guns and whatnot. I even somewhat sympathize and understand the appeal of games like Skyrim, but Fallout would be so much goddamn better if it had good dungeons and developers who cared about the soul of the series. And I would definitely take worse exploration and dungeon crawling if it came with a real Fallout experience again.

But like you said, we've lost. I was introduced to the series in Fallout 3, was a big fan of Obsidian before New Vegas, and New Vegas's improvements over Bethesda's games made me go back and check the old games. They almost feel like a completely different series.

For anyone who hasn't touched 76 , I dont blame you, but I think Bethesda has learned their lessons and actually applied some of the logic in this video.

You can find places that humams have actually build and a lot of it makes sense realistically, the game features less of the random deathclaws and scorpions and includes more intricate creatures that are actually surprising to find. For example there's a quest where you visit a mansion/skyscraper thing and on the upper floor is a place where the last resident was keeping a pet sloth and built a sanctuary for him, the sloth that has now turned into a giant horribly mutated version. 76 lacks any good writing and is mostly barebones as a live service game but I think it's probably the best attempt Bethesda has ever made to creating a reasonable post apocalyptic world without all the unnecessary 1950s aesthetics.

There is variety there are no minuteman or the institute in Fallout New Vegas, there is no NCR or Caesars Legion in Fallout 4, there are no robot scientists with human brains in Fallout 4 doing genetic engineering.
Ive just played new Vegas and Fallout 4 but the variety is undeniable.

Bethesda games have always seemed very shallow in terms of how deeply they expressed and explored the settings. The post apocalyptic setting in fallout has so much potential for giant cities with gangs and drug trades and gamepkay mechanics based on living in said city as a business owner or gang member/leader or a father/husband ext... almost all of their games give yoy just enough of a taste of the world tk want to live in them but then refuse to allow you you to live there. My best experience in any Bethesda game by far was role playing a father and husband trying to make a living as a trader/farmer using the various survival and realism mods. Somehing about growing and minjng your oun ingredients and materials to then craft goods and walk/ride to a city to sell your good and purchase supplies is next level immersion. Having to sleep and eat while out on travels and having to worry about how the elements affect you, carry weight along Smith a backpack system and campfire/sleeping bag system. It all comes together to an experience where you start to get so engaged that you begin to feel like you are actually living an life as someone in the game instead of being painfully aware that you are playing a video game.

The point about the human settlement still being absolutely filthy and even having skeletons and corpses strewn about is the strongest point you pose in the video. It is absurd that peoole would just chose to live in squalor and filth for literally no discernable reason as if "oh the world went trough an apocalypse 200 years ago guess for the rest of humanity we will just live like the nukes dripped yesterday".

In New Vegas, you can talk to The King about why they impersonate Elvis. He explains that no one even knows the guys name. They only know him as the king. They just found this school of impersonation and the coolness effected everyone to a degree that they couldn't let it die out. These gangsters acknowledge how its good for morale and they call each other kings, all in the shadow of Elvis. Thats a convincing story of discovery from people who only know the wasteland.

If Bethesda did this in 4 or 76 it would have been so bad.

My friend thought that Hiroshima would still be in rubble, or at least somewhat visually damaged before he went there in 2015.
He was shocked to see the effects of 65 years of restoration.

I thought he was crazy, and now thanks to you, I feel the same about Bethesda, who apparently think it’s believable that civilizations would be in rubble 200 years after a bomb.
