Understand what Dr C says: “mismatch repair deficiency”.

The 14 patients have a genetic defect which makes them more prone to cancer than average

However, mismatch repair deficiency, in addition to making cancer more likely, also appears to make some patients highly responsive to immunotherapy

So - mismatch repair deficiency ironically saves some of us - or at least extends life by driving high response rates to immunotherapy - from the very cancers it causes

Unfortunately, people with colon or rectal cancers that are not caused by mismatch repair deficiency are unlikely to have a response like what was observed in the 14 people in this study

There are other cancers, such as melanoma, wherein immunotherapy has completely eradicated “ordinary” cancers, meaning cancers without a specific genetic defect as a “prerequisite” for a strong or even complete response

My cousin has been saved from stage 4 melanoma. He’s on 5 years clear and he has no unique genetic defects

In the other hand, a college classmate has stage 4 colon cancer but not mismatch repair deficiency. His doctors won’t even try immunotherapy as a Hail Mary. They’re trying to extend his life with non-immunotherapy drugs, chemotherapy, etc.

My points are:

1) that this study could give false hope to people with rectal or colon (or anywhere in the bowels) cancers not caused by mismatch repair deficiency;

2) for some cancers, eg melanoma, it appears that immunotherapy can be curative or at least put the cancer in long-term remission without a prerequisite genetic defect which, in colorectal cancer, acts as a catalyst and key to a cure

And 3) search for studies on immunotherapy and/or speak to an oncologist fluent in immunotherapy

Merck has a drug called pembrolizumab (commercial name - Keytruda), which they’re trialing with virtually every known cancer. Results have been mixed. Search a particular cancer type plus “keytruda”. Chances are you’ll find that Merck is working on the particular cancer about which you’re concerned or just curious

.....we see these kind of "breakthroughs" all the time and nothing comes of it. This particular drug has a lot of limitations....PLUS, it's still administered in conjunction with chemo! Isn't time to come up with something that works without the poison of chemo? This news was a year ago. Haven't heard much more since...nothing miraculous for sure. It's being used for specific cancers by specific population groups. I've lost two family members and countless friends to cancer and I've come to the conclusion that Pharma will never cure cancer. There's TOO MUCH MONEY WRAPPED UP IN DIAGNOSTICS AND TREATMENT. Lots of products and professions would no longer be necessary. Think about that for a moment. Cancer is a multi-billion dollar industry. Any 'honest' and totally candid oncologist will be the first to tell you that.

Ironically, the standard American diet andplant-based diets that lead to insulin resistance lead to dysfunction of the dendritic cells, compromising the body's own resources to counteract cancer - which could be possible on a zero-carb, or, at least, low carb protocol. Big food provides patients for big pharma!
