Not so much a cargo ship as a ferry, albeit mostly for trucks. Similar services exist for crossing other seas too -- we took one between Igoumenitsa (Greece) and Bari (Italy) several years ago.

I just came across this, so I am a bit late in responding. This trip was obviously made easier because you spoke the language. For those of us who are less educated, would there be difficulties if we only spoke English or Spanish?

I have traveled many thousands of miles at sea to answer your question. From calm waters to hurricanes, I've done it all. Yet, I never get bored traveling, even if the trip is as short as this one. To @katerinazervata I say Yassou. Some of my fondest travels overseas were during an extended stay on the island of Crete. Wonderful people!

IT'S A FERRY . Not a cargo ship. You met the "truck drivers" they go on ferries. Cargo ships carry cargo! Containers or holds full of coal and stuff. NO truck drivers

We sometimes had tourists on the boat and each time they were a pain in the arse.

That is a massive room, for being on a ship.

Cargo ship travel is the way most people travel between the islands here in Vanuatu. Most vessels have no distinction between a passenger or cargo ship. This type of ship would be of good use here in Vanuatu

Wow! I had no idea this was a thing! I would TOTALLY disconnect from the world and travel on a cargo ship! I just googled it and found one that looks pretty cool and goes to Quebec!

Oh well. Many people seem to be in a "twist" over the usage of "boat" or "ship". How about major comments over usage of "line" or "rope". Or better yet, steering commands are now "left" or "right ", as opposed to "port " and "starboard"; "shift" as opposed to "watch" . As long as the usage is comprehensible, to the intent of the comment, I continue reading with no thought of correcting.

Another undpoken stress level is the food The ship my receive different sailing orders. You can end up in a place not covenient with no visa. Or the ship may have to temporarily anchor before it can go into port to discharge cargo. Altogether this ship has a dedicated run for trucks.
