Hiking is a means to an end for me. I hike to get to my spot to camp/bushcraft. I enjoy going on a 2-4 mile hike to where I'm camping, but hiking just for hiking isn't my thing. So my solution to "my gear is too heavy" is I just train with almost twice as much weight to make it a non issue during the real thing.

Thank you!!!!! Wanting to get into bushcrafting and I keep watching hiking videos along with the bushcrafting ones and with all the emphasis in the hiking videos on everything being ultralight I’ve really been struggling trying to figure out what to carry. It seems simple common sense to start out asking myself “how far do I plan on going” and “what do I plan on doing” but frankly those questions haven’t been addressed in my mind to any great extent. Thank you for helping this martial artist/wannabe bushcrafter to “FOCUS”.

Don't bring a knife hiking. It is not weight effective.

I think in the overlap for me includes edc kit I try to have a universal kit centralized around basic needs everywhere shelter is probably the biggest one for me that and a knife I'm trying to incorporate fire it's difficult for me to get the Sparks to catch from flint and steel fero rod and it's not always expedient to start a fire when closer to Urban areas. So practicing my fire starting skills is difficult. I think having a decent amount of cordage is very important as well for me and I'm trying to learn not switch I give you credit for that. Water I always have water I mean metal container that's not ultra light. Well I always have a couple energy bars for quick food. And along the fire starting issue is that it's not as easy as it looks in the videos people have that common misconception that it is black and white while the wind might be different for them and their scenario the wetness of the material and if your hands are cold and your hands hurts it can be difficult to start a fire. But I'm finding with the frigid Winters worse than the Pennsylvania Winters that fire is something I'm going to have to add maintaining my core temperature is something I tried to do all the time. But shelter water food and cutting implements cordage are important I have the t6 zero I added the tile on top so I can make a hood hang configuration for extra protection I also added tile points on the spaces between each corner. It is spacious I do apply point a lot. Anyway I have been looking for a way to lighten my load but be effective in most situations. And with your videos I find what you teach enables you to carry less and do more and that is intriguing to me. To see a tree and not just see the tree but see a chair and to make it happen there's something cool about that thank you for the video.

Thanks. Based on this, I realized I am more into Bushcrafting because I wan't to live in outdoors, not just see and enjoy. There will be times when when we need to backpack/hike soI will buy gear that overlaps these two. For some gear, I might need to buy two sets for these two lifestyles.

Just as a point. Bushcraft is just outdoor living skills...hiking is walking in the outdoors...survival is what you do in an emergency. They are not the same thing but have related elements. When the people evacuated the would trade center they were not doing Bushcraft...or hiking...but doing survival... cutting down a tree is not hiking but is Bushcraft...but you might have to hike to cut the tree down.
Hiking is just walking...you equipped yourself with the appropriate clothes and equipment for what you are doing...carry a chainsaw...axe...100lbs of beef jerky...everyone has the right to be stupid.

Bigfooting is between hiking and bushcrafting. We hike, but may have unexpected stops along the way where we might be a while (taking video or photos, casting prints or exploring one specific area). I'd like to incorporate more bushcrafting into my days when I'm out in the woods, and you've shown me how! We found more prints yesterday, and it threatened rain - i was all prepared to throw up a tarp shelter on the spot. Because I watched you do it, and have practiced, I know that I can. Thanks, Dan!

Bushcrafting uses skills that can save your life on a hike gone bad. Hiking conditions your body to wander rugged terrain. Each is beneficial to the other. Neither is better or worse than the other. BOTH include land navigation.

Also during a hike you can include some bushcraft practice.

I like the distinction you make. I personally have been developing a "hybrid" kit and mentality for years now--started more as backpacker (lightweight), and am slowly adding cooler tools and gear to my kit(s). I am now confident in saying that the aesthetics of "bush crafting" items are very important to me! So many people look like they came right out of an REI catalogue and I'm glad I'm moving into the other direction. I'd rather get stronger and carry my HEAVY oilskin tarp, because when I set it up and the sun sets, it's like the coolest, most romantic roof to be under--for sure! Peace!

On point as usual. I learned about bushcrafting to augment my "camping" trips with my son. I am a disabled vet and my ability to walk off into the woods is limited. So I bushcraft out of my truck and do lite day hiking as a compromise. My son is in love with the outdoors. It is the only time I don't hear him say he is bored (without electronics). Thanks for the videos, the information, and the inspiration.

Say Heah, I totally understand what your saying. Infact I got to a point that I try using my tools less and less, I love to Bushcraft even when I go on a Hike. But when I go Scouting a New Area and perhaps go on a overnighter, I bring sufficient tools. Most of my Scouting Trips, I like to minimally take atleast a Basic Trio. A Good Belt Knife, Hatchet and Saw. Multi Tool and a Good Pocket Knife. Lite for me is being able to carry my Basic Trio on person. Yup, on my Survival Belt. I also carry redundant items, like First Aide, Firestarter Gear, etc. Oh, Yeah a Compass and Enough Water. But also on a Hike in let's sat a familiar are, I still like a Basic Trio. Infact I like my Mora 2000, Mora Hatchet and my Bacho Laplander which I take my Haversack with my 5 C's. That's Lite for me and it's very Lite. I also have other makes of Lite Trio's like my Vintage Case Trio. Even my Black Bokor Vox Rold that I attached my Mora Classic #1 to the Sheath, I like adding my 17" Hultafors Bruks Agdor Hatchet plus my Corona Curved Razor Teeth Saw. Yeah, I enjoy the out of doors alot. I like going out for a Afternoon Delight which beats a Mc Dee's scenery any day of the week. I like my A La Mors Coffee with eveporated milk and a little honey, My Paul'ies A La Cart, Chicken and Dumplings and a couple of good cigars. Try that at a Mc Dee's, heh heh heh.,,.p

As a hiker and backpacker I'm going to say BINGO! I have days I go for a hike, lightweight, moving and covering ground. Other days I go out to my camp in the woods to work on my skills. Thanks for clearing the confusion. I've had people ask me how do I go hiking and carry my gear for camp. I tell them I don't. Great video.

Much of the hiking many of us do is in protected high peak areas (Such as the Greens, the Whites and the Adirondacks here in the East) and buscrafting is not even legal. No fires, no cutting trees, no camping, etc. So, the two activities are often done in different places.

For me Bushcraft is: go out tool heavy, and with the tools you bring you can stay out and you make what ever you need. Camping is: you bring gear and food for spesific number of days. Then you must home to re-supply if you want to stay out longer. Hiking is: you walk walk walk setting up a light camp, eat sleep. Walk next morning.
