Lumumba wanted independence, but he did not properly understand the complexities of running an independent nation. Instead of taking his time to put in place proper structures to safeguard his regime, he took off in a belligerent haste. A modern army needs experienced and we'll trained officers to direct its affairs. Lumumba settled for his crony Mobutu, appointed him Colonel and head of the army. The rest is history. Mobutu was given an entire army to lead, and he led it effectively according to his level of training and competence.
