The reason you're getting burn marks when routing is likely due to the router being set at the wrong speed. For larger bits you should use a slower speed. The bit should come with the recommended speed on it. Hope this helps!

The back blading you were doing is card scraping. You should grab a few... It's amazing how fast you can smooth woodgrain with that technique. Few people seem to do it/know about it
