Jesus, it wasn't different from any early social media site or earlier internet chatrooms (as we often see until this day), it was new and unruly, and some people have a dark sense of humour, which is not a crime until it is. (And if you are stupid enough to click on every link you find around the internet), 4chan had warnings about the various parts of the imageboard, which you used at your own risk no guns pointing at you, and you could close the site and never come back or skip any thread you want it.
