Good to see Vietnam progress. Too bad Vietnam could not start earlier, but better late than never. Next, Vietnam needs support from China on improving its energy supply. Solar, wind, hydro, and nuclear should be in Vietnam's mix. Without tariffs, Vietnam can benefit from the least expensive solution to green energy, and like high speed rail, it can learn to produce, maintain, and grow its own. Energy is the key to industrialization and following China's path, create energy and companies will follow. Vietnam should also send students to China to learn about technology so it can stand on its own and create jobs and economic rise to benefit society and the country.

If this is the case, Vietnam finally woke up and realised to tap into China's economy and expertise. Earlier year Vietnam was watching China because of past distrust. Present situation and events tell Vietnam it is the right time... Now.

HSR delay in Vietnam for decade because the project cost $100 billion dollar by the time it completed. With interest rate 4%year which equal to $4 billion dollars not include maintenance cost. Vietnam average per capita income $10usd/day, the government cant afford it. Who going to use HRS ? Thailand 40 million tourist dont even build HSR. You cant buy a Farrari if you are on low income scale.

Vietnam HSR project if given to Japan will bankrupt the country in the long run. Japanese Shinkasen are almost homegrown industry, it has never been proven in other country. The Indian HSR project by Japan is yet to be seen not to mention tested at all....

I am not sure whether Vietnam is sincere in really cooperating with China in its HSR network because they had initially cooperated with Japan but disaster. Now they realise they have no choice but to cooperate with China.

In the past there would be huge and violent CIA-inspired protests against any big project undertaken by China. Now they should be aware that Vietnam's friend is the country that help build the railway, not the US that bombed Vietnam extensively.

Hopefully vietnam is getting smart. Now they know japan is hopeless. They also know that its former enemy that is america, is now trying to court vietnam. Hopefully vietnam also realise that anything america touches becomes trash at super high cost. So vietnam must not be a stooge of america or japan.

The comments about VN decision was based on China’s superior technology is off base.

Vietnam decides to go with China for this project is a way to reduce its exposure to the G7 trade activities and USD, ie VN is increasing its trade with BRICS. It is also building its goodwill credit with key BRICS countries for future joining.

Wise decision vietnamese makes, for if they use japanese rail ,japanese will eventually makes the train either bigger or smaller, so their tracks don't fit ! This to disrupt B.R.I.C plans ! Also the speed of construction and pricing .

Vietnam wants China to do their highspeed railway for free. As of now, Vietnam still owe millions of dollars to Hitachi company for the 14 km metro system in Ho Chi Minh city started in 2012. This project is still pending unfinished after 12 years. China should think twice before doing anything for Vietnam.

Do the Vietnamese DISTRUST THE CHINESE SSOOOO MUCH??? Do you really think the Chinese wanted to Swallow you up???

At the end of your years-long search, you still have to go Knocking on China's Door.

Vietnam has a wake up call realizing the rest of ASEAN stepping up on BRI or will be left behind. Better clean up red tape and corruption. That's the first priority. Otherwise China will not bother with any project. The first completd subway section in the north was very troublesome in political sense.

Vietnam saw the potential rail link with China because the China-Laos connections has shown result and opportunity for greater future development along this line. And when did Japan ever trusted the Vietnamese to begin with? Japanese do not trust anyone outside of its island borders walls! It only listen to the U.S or European for engagement and development.
