Love the “ exploring the neighborhood” analogy. I have stumbled into some pretty fun stuff doing just that. Both on the kit and while walking or driving around . In either scenario you also discover quickly when you’ve made a turn into the wrong neighborhood. :— )

Brilliant. It will take me about a month to get this grooving, but then I can drop it in Jazz band. I predict my director will frown at first. He’s an expert in world grooves, and he’ll question that Hihat, but maybe he’ll let me do it.

I always tell my drum students to experiment and have fun with songs once they get comfortable playing them the way they're performed - this is a concept I borrowed from your blueprint and house analogy.
