How to Build a Floating Deck

One beam is enough in the center of the deck? Find it hard to believe that it will not twist.. Why two rim joists where they don't carry any weight? And where is the blocking between the joists?..

My favorite part is that I own all craftsman tools shown. I know some will say I should invest in better but ive long since earned my $$ back in projects and things ive sold and they work flawlessly still.

I built floating deck in Pa where we get lots of snow and frozen ground. Was skeptical at first, bu worked out great, still fine after 8 years!

Do you need that many deck blocks if you're using joist hangers?

Why did you put so many concrete pier blocks why not just joist hangers on both ledger and beam ?

What about freeze thaw?

Joists are various widths.. if you want a flat deck, line the top of each one up with the top of the cross-member, then attach the hanger. You can screw another board on top of the joist and hang it on the cross-member while you attach the joist hanger.

I'm planning a somewhat smaller (roughly 5.5'x 12') floating deck next to the house. Do I need to use the Concrete deck blocks ? I ask because I have some 12x12 pathway bricks i'd like to repurpose as deck blocks. The deck will only need to support a small table couple chairs and a Grill. :) Your thoughts ?

This is a 14'x14' deck, the deck blocks are about a foot in from the ends.
