People get a pass when they rescue a dog from a bad situation even if the dog is “too much for them”, it’s life or death at that point. All the shamers and Malinois elitists are going to get called out in the next podcast.

As a musician, I like to say: If your dog is dominant, you need to become the tonic.

That dog is dominant and also100% smart. It responds immediately to correction. The owners are completely the issue. Specifically this woman who should not be handling a dominant dog breed. I'm glad they are getting help.

The owners seems to not understand the problem, much less the solution. While Joel has them in the office and malinois is up in her face while she is seated is NOT acceptable behavior. They seem to want a protection dog, but have no idea how to set boundaries or handle one.

STOP PETTING THE FREAKING DOG OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN! One thing I always try to stay on top of are these over-emotional and touchy feely owners. They pet these dogs out of their own insecurities and misunderstandings thinking that they are securing these dogs because they think the dog jumping on them means pet me and they give the dog what they want. Take charge and tell your dog to lay down and chill out or go off and do their own thing. Demanding attention is also a dominant roll of your dog telling you what to do and when to do it and you as a “Dog training for idiots” owner give the dog what it’s demanding in agreeance. Look at the interaction between a dominant male and submissive female dog. The dominant male will come over and stand over the female and the female will lick him and rub up against him. That is him asserting his dominance and her submitting to him. Don’t be afraid to push your dog away and tell your dog to go lay down or do their own thing. They will still love you the same and they will be alright. You as the owner should initiate when the play and pet times are, not your dog.

Joel I wish you would open up a school for dog trainers so we had more trainers like you around the country. The only way I was able to train my dog to stop being over reactive to males was hours of watching your videos and now he's in daycare every day with all kinds of dogs and has no problems. Really enjoy your content brother.

PEOPLE have a hard time separating emotion from instinct in animals. You went hard on his instinct when you needed to, which was extremely appropriate. Owners need to understand they have to correct bad behavior in “mama dog” ways. PEOPLE DO NOT CORRECT YOUR DOG OUT OF ANGER OR FRUSTRATION. Be consistent, and understand it take humans 66 times to create habit so be patient as well. Love your dog enough to train, or have it trained, well.

Ok so here’s my take:

Yes I agree some dogs are more dominant from birth. Sometimes we see these are the ones that push the others while nursing and tend to be the fattest ones or the ones who grow a little faster. In order to break the dogs will you have to be the assertive one from the get go. That means setting boundaries and reinforcing them daily. For example , making the puppy wait after you serve his food. Let the food sit there for at least 1 minutes while the dog waits. When he lunges at the food don’t let him until you give the word “ ok” . Teaching the dog to watch for your cues. Then there is socializing. This can be done early by exposing the dog to other puppies and keeping an electric collar on the dog. If the dog steps out of line , send a correction immediately and say NO! This will help the dog see that this behavior is inappropriate. Early socialization and behavioral intervention is easier at puppy level. It’s also important to remember to reward good behaviors with affection or treats occasionally.

I recall when we (now my ex) got our Rott. I told her he'd get to about 120lbs and that there's only going to be one alpha dog in the house, and that was me. If not, he'd be uncontrollable. People have to want to step into that role. Otherwise you'll have a big (potentially dangerous) mess on your hands.

I’m 5 months late but here we go. She asked, “is there a reasoning behind that?…”. Like no ma’am, just as he mentioned a handful of times before, your dog is dominant, plain and simple. Dogs don’t reason like humans do, they don’t have an explanation to give for why they do what they do, because dogs don’t reason like people do.

Typical narcissistic woman… no you’re not the victim nor does your dog think you’re a victim, he is just dominant, it’s not about you, it’s about the dog. Capiche? No chance she’ll ever understand though.

I just want to know, what is the expectation on the owners now? Cause presumably they don't have 10 dogs to use as training tools lying around. Like, how do they actually go about recreating the desensitization on their own? (Asking for a friend)

Finally a dog whose behavior actually matches my dog's: a tense moment durng a greeting followed by an explosion and attack.
I do feel like I could make some progress, if I had access to a ton of other dogs where I could do repeated greetings and corrections, but... how the hell do people go about getting this training in? Just ask the neighbors if I can let my dog try to attack their dog a bunch of times?
Honestly the only thing I can think of is maybe a board and train where they actually have access to a bunch of other dogs for training.
I'd also like to see a follow up of this dog... how much progress was/can be made with a dog like this?
Could he (or my dog) EVER be trusted in the future and say, go to a dog park, unmuzzled?

The Female-Owner thinks that buying a B-Mal means that the DOG knows that other B-Mals were bought to be working dogs. lol. It's just a dog. A clean template at birth, and is unbridled nature coupled with the experiences of [that] dog. She's thinking there's a DNA code for working dog or guard dog. Meanwhile, the same people who think dogs are born with our anthropomorphized ideas are HOSTILE to the notion that groups races have [EYE CUE] averages that DIFFER ... massively. Eg ... a certain special group of them in the US have an ~85 average ... another ~95, vs the national avg of ~100. As if we're not both mammals ...

Matching owners with dog types is key. I really don't think the owners of that Malinois are capable of dealing with the dog. Yeah it's the "dog you got" but maybe they need a different temperament dog. I hope they are for everyone's sake. I raised schutzhund bred American Bulldogs for 10 years and they aren't dogs that just anyone can own. You have to know what you are doing. Malinois are the same. If you don't properly train a working dog, it's going to be a major problems often times and that training doesn't end. You also have to tire them out every day which isn't easy. If you don't want to deal with a dog's dominance, get the dog that ignores you and stays laying down when you meet it.

More people need to see this. It's beyond frustrating not being able to correct other people's dogs when they are trying to be dominant towards my intact Rhodesian. 99% of the time it's a female owned dog and you can tell instantly when Karen yells "stop" to her disobedient dog the dog has zero care about his owner and clearly has not been taught boundaries.

Lived on a farm as a kid. Friends of my parents took a shelter dog in, a monster of a dog and he was abused. He was uncontolable in their home in the city, jumping clean over the dining tablke if he saw something at the window. First thing he did at our place was grab a chicken XD Anyway, I did not like the dog. He was unruly but we became best friend. He listened to me like noone else. All I did when he did something bad was grab him, push him on his back and tell him no and I kept eye contact untill he looked away. Never did more than that. He listened so well that eventually he knew what I wanted. I did not like him to beg for food or look at me while I was eating. I just had to look at him and he would walk out the kitchen and he would wait around the corner out of sight untill I was done eating :P
