If Korolev hadn't passed I believe the USSR would have been first. As soon as he passed it seems, the USA caught up and got their first firsts. They both won as they both achieved what they wanted. Both achieved very important things and contributed greatly to science.

The space race was a stalemate that benefited both sides and even those who did not participate (GPS, for example).

So basically the Soviets won in every single race to space field (that matters that is) except for putting a man on the moon which if you think about it does absolutely nothing and serves nothing except for showing off.

Calling Sputnik 1 a "satellite" is generous. It was literally a beeping radio. Explorer 1 on the other hand had actually scientific equipment on board, including measurement equipment and temperature sensors. And Explorer 1 also lasted in orbit 5x times longer than Sputnik 1 so yeah. USA had the technological superiority from the very start.

I believe there wasn't space race. USSR wasn't racing at all, but just developing their science and technology. USA at the time felt threated and start a "race", by running alone. And USSR just went on their developing. I never saw a act by USSR in a race or a goal to win something like that. Only thing I heard of is this kennedy's goal tô reach the moon in the 60's.

Soviets vastly benefitted humanity from their accomplishments in space, the moon landing was a desperation attempt by the US to save face, it didnt benefit humanity at all, it was a PR stunt. A very impressive accomplishment but did not help humanity whatsoever. Due to Soviet resilience, they are the reason why we have all these navigation.
The Apollo landing was the only victory the Americans had during the entire cold war space technology.

ussr won, first satellite, first animal in space, first man in space. the us caught up barely then accomplished one first. granted it was an impressive first but i think overall ussr won. personally i dont think it matters because as many said below it really is humanity that won from the foolish competition between tribalist nations. but still i definitely think its at best a tie, and probably a ussr win
