Think about it. Parents arent staying together, weak parenting not teaching the child to be tough, Crap education system with tonnes of bullying, social media and we dont even discuss any of this. Of course its going to get worse. I thank god i was born in 1992 to traditionalist parents who prepared me for the world and no internet growing up

So, your answer to the mental health crisis, is to funnel more money into the NHS? We have been putting more money into that failing institution, every year for decades now - and it keeps getting worse. The NHS is the UK's largest expense, and does more to mismanage our tax than anything else. The thing needs restructuring, for funds to be reallocated - I'd rather see it shut down than it's budgets raised.

As an NHS mental health worker it’s really difficult seeing people struggling so much whilst simultaneously being overworked and burnt out myself, that it is very difficult to give every single person the time they deserve. You hear a lot how rubbish mental health services are, but it’s tricky as myself and peers who are some of the most wonderful people doing the best they can, constrained by the system…

Long Covid is being COMPLETELY ignored. In 2022 I decided to study psychology and retrain to be a counsellor. I was a key worker during the pandemic (non-medical), and although I followed every precaution and got vaccinated and boosted, many of the people around me didn't bother so from March 2020 to March/May 2022 I had 4 infections confirmed by lat. flow and PCR tests (there might've been more). In June 2022 I collapsed at work, had to leave my psychology course and my desire to help people, and for two years I have almost become a shut-in. There is little to no support in my area, any long covid clinics that were available have now been closed and while the funding is there, it is not being spent. My mental health is shot to hell (I've had to access emergency mental health care a number of times). I am in my 30's, I had been physically fit and travelled the world, but now I am physically and mentally impaired. I've been waiting since March 2023 to access healthcare, treatment of any kind or benefits... and I'm still waiting. Reinfections will keep happening, and more people WILL get Long Covid. This is a mass international disabling event (not an exaggeration) and it is being COMPLETELY ignored or minimised because it has yet to effect those with power, money and influence.

Cost of living and social media are to blame. You watch or see people on social media doing well, showing off there wealth and riches and wonder why you also can't be like them. Unfortunately only 1% are able to live the high life, everyone else can only dream.

In light of the ongoing global economic crisis, it is crucial for everyone to prioritize investing in diverse sources of income that are not reliant on the government. This includes exploring opportunities in stocks, gold, silver, and digital currencies. Despite the challenging economic situation, it remains a favorable time to consider these investments.

ADHD isn’t a mental health condition, it’s a neurological disorder. The difference is that ADHD can’t be cured and isn’t caused by an outside stimuli. Sure it can be exacerbated, but that person will always have ADHD.
The reason people are suddenly getting diagnosed is because more research of ADHD (and all other Neurodivergencies while we’re talking about it) is appearing with a broader range on test subjects than the usual white male subject pool they used to pull from.
It wasn’t until 1997 that researchers began including women into their research, feeding into the belief that autism and adhd were boy disorders which is hilariously not the case.
Minorities have flown under the diagnosis radar because of their life-or-death need to mask their neurodivergency. People of colour might be attacked for displaying neurodivergent behaviour. Girls are admonished for displaying any sort of erratic or weird behaviours that coincide with neurodivergency. People in poverty don’t have the luxury of listening to their neurodivergent needs because they need to work and push beyond their disabled capacity…
This in itself is another reason why actual mental health issues are on the rise.

(For reference, I work as a counsellor for autistic adults, and am a neurodivergent person myself)

Though younger people are asking for help, the highest suicide rates are people aged 50-54, women in their 50's had the highest suicide rate in 2022. Suicide is the leading cause of death for men below 50 and rises again for men 75+.
By focusing on one age demographic ie under 25 it feeds into the narrative of a mentally weak generation. If the mental health crisis is seen across all ages, it becomes a societal issue. What in our society is leading to the rise in mental crisis and how can we change it.

The human body is not designed to live in an artificial environment like the capitalist economy. The consequences are beyond devastating, both for humans and nature, including the fauna and flora. We are simply a primitive destructive species. Our behavior is simply cancer to the planet. Nothing we do, makes sense. We destroy everything, we forget common sense, only to tick off boxes on a KPI sheet. Mental health problems are a clear indication of a dying societal construct

Hmm my brother doesn't speak to me anymore. Avoids everyone since the pandemic. Extreme paranoia, but nothing we can do. He just stays in his room all day. Like some people where sad for a bit, like myself I needed to deal with anxiety during the pandemic. Didn't need help necessarily, I helped myself. Not everyone is capable of that though. People think just think happy positive thoughts is the answer, and listen to happy music. How far from the truth you are if you think that deals with peoples problems. I want to feel my emotions hence music exists. Positive thoughts isn't the point, but a result of seeing the better side of something. By saying that you are devaluing how people feel. It better to help people work round to seeing the good, as life happens all around us and doesn't stop, and it can be a beautiful thing.

I feel another comment is in order. Year on year life is getting harder in the UK. My company I work in is cutting back hours, it happened in my last job before I left. This is a big cycle. Unless you take management or supervisor positions your in more danger of getting hours cut. A young person of today has little job security and has to often work multiple jobs. I work 3. This isn't necessarily by choice, more by need. I do what I can to manage, but understanding my finances and tax whilst running a business had been a big learning curve that a person younger than myself would definitely struggle far more with. Some people think I had failed, but there are rules hidden with this country that keep you poor. You have to navigate your way round a minefield. Keep your head in the game, and learn those rules and get in control of your finances... it will hopefully get easier eventually. I look forward to the day I can reduce my job to 2, and then 1 again. I look forward to the day I have money from one source or all without employment, and I don't have to think much about it. Consistency is key, and I had the job I wanted for like six months before it was shat on... so I went self employed and am doing what I need to survive on top of that to do what I love doing. Now I just don't want an employer. I don't want my life controlled by someone who doesn't see my value. People don't spend money like they used to, because they don't have it. So it endless cycle of shrinking hours, you got to find a way to navigate that. No wonder mental health is worse. Every year for me has been a battle, now this year I take home 24k-25k before tax. Not a lot but more than I have ever earned.

This area is too subjective to report on accurately. I wouldn't take it seriously, as it's pretty normal to be going through mental health issues between 17-24 years old. Also, depression and anxiety can be learned behaviour. COVID-19 did create stress for people, as it created uncertainty in life for youngsters. Uptake will be high as it's more normalised, I would expect this to create more resilient and happier people as there are more resources to access..

I'm not sure ADHD is a mental health issue. It's a disability needed to be assessed by an educational Psychiatrist, but Depression & Anxiety are co-morbid conditions. There are also lots of adults who go through the clinical route before referal to Psych UK. Psych UK will give you good info on ADHD. It's also a genetic disorder, & not something that can be developed unless you carry the ADHD gene which is triggered by trauma. This is an Important distinction. Autism isn't a mental health issue any more than ADHD - But yes co-morbid conditions are common.

Uncomfortable truth: frustration = expectations - reality. The cuddling of the American (British) mind is the book to read. I acknowledge we are going downhill (whole Europe) but the new generations were raised expecting the world to adapt to them, constant rewards (Prizes just for participating…), social media, and all the woke nonsense (let’s face it. They over done it). Now cook it with the Brexit and 20 years of bad economic policy and the whole nonsense of private vs public etc. We need to get back to the common sense and start using the brains and bin all the MBA and Oxford-politics politicians. We need true leadership and technical skills.

Bonus track: co living, co sharing, chai lattes etc. All consolation prizes for a completely lack of vision on where they are going. It is our fault, not just theirs. They need to change attitude but we put them on a lose position

Pathetic pandering with those 'causes' you listed... ADHD has been historically underdiagnosed, especially in women and POC. Those 'subclinical' cases are just people who's environment is allowing them to function a little better, but that is not a given for ever and they will end up struggling without the diagnosis and meds at some point. While there is already so much doubt and straight up hate towards disabled, it was a low blow for you to even mention the DSM criteria changes and blaming those who seek help.
You spend the beginning of the video showing how mental health was getting worse way before the pandemic yet focused on LOCKDOWNS as a cause, with only a mention that it's not conclusive while there are many researches showing that suicide rates actually dropped during lockdowns. Failed to mention how covid infections are PROVEN to cause mental health issues? I'm glad that people in the comments know themselves that it's the efonomical struggles what's the main reason. You could have focused on that, which is an undeniable fact regardless of other factors and stay away from topics that only bring more harm if covered irresponsibly.
I understand that you need to pander to the majority but doing that the costs of most the disadvantaged is disgusting. You just furthered the agenda that hurts those already disabled and disables more people by ommiting the truth and focusing on BS lockdown takes.

Reporting in the media blurs diagnoses given by your GP of "depression" and "anxiety", and formal psychiatric diagnoses made through a 50min clinical interview by a psychiatrist (e.g. MDD, Recurrent Depressive Disorder, GAD, Panic Disorder). Only some patients treated via GP will ever be referred to the CMHT for specialist treatment. And, this is unlikely to change. CMHTs largely deal with patients diagnosed with psychotic disorders and bipolar affective disorders, and the rest are small numbers from other diagnoses such as OCD.

CMHTs use clinical interviews to diagnose. Questionnaires may be used in specific cases (& I believe that's more common in the US), but they are largely research tools, and were not necessarily designed for diagnosis. Tge UK usually uses ICD, not DSM, although a psychiatrist may use DSM terminology with patients as DSM diagnoses are more commonly known than the ICD (e.g. bipolar affective disordee vs bipolar disorder 1 & 2).

Ultimately those with serious mental illness continue to get caught in the middle of this. We now have Sunak targeting large numbers of benefit claimants with SMI to force them into FT work.

I mean no disrespect to anyone and haven't set out to upset anyone. CMHTs are hell holes and to be avoided at all costs. There are some good psychiatrists out there but the least capable, flippant, callous, vindictive, power hungry medics seem to be hiding out in UK psychiatry - the one group of patients above all who cannot complain because they already know that they won't be believed, and will end up on the receiving vindictive end of their dr.

How to fix it? Remove dementia care from the mental health budget, and stop giving funding earmarked for MH budget to A&E. Clinical psychology should be moved out from psychiatry, and funding spent there. Psychiatrists are largely very expensive pharmacists, but your pharmacist knows more about how mechanism if actions of meds, and side effects, than the consultant psychiatrist. Psychiatrists think they know how to talk to patients but they do a lot of damage with words, and have no training in therapy. I'd rather not bankrupt the NHS on wages of consultants when £120k can be put to more positive use
