Hah! Just wait. At my height I spoke almost 40 languages, half of them with some fluency. Now I have trouble remembering English. There are these embarrassing pauses while I try to think how to talk around the word or phrase I needed but couldn't remember. .🙄

I keep remembering the wrong things. For "excuse me" I kept thinking "Intruding on zie." I've got dozens of them. I won't list them here for fear of de-progressing people. Just a warning. It does not help to think of what the word reminds you of. Do not use cognates to "remind" you of a word. In fact, if you have studied how the brain works, you may know you almost always picture something in your mind before putting words to it. And these pictures become ingrained in your mind. It doesn't matter if green "granny Smith" apples are you favorites, and are usually green or yellow, when you hear the word "apple" your mind will picture a red smallish round apple. So when you want to learn a word in another language, you will learn it faster if you ignore your usual mental picture, which is associated with English, and make a whole new image while you learn the new word. If you hear a word for "dog" in the language, and your dog is a pit bull, it is faster for you to remember the word if you picture a huge bright orange collie or something.. When you learn the word for school, never picture your own school. Picture Harry Potter's school or something for the new word. That's one reason German is so hard. There are so many cognates with German, and your mind wants to cut back to English all the time. Learning Spanish is even worse that way. If you already know Spanish, linguists will give you terrible advice. "Now learn Portuguese or Italian. It's so much like Spanish!" Bad idea. And if you learn German, DO NOT take up Dutch or something very like German. Try something like Japanese, totally different.

I have watched a few of your videos ... and find it interesting how you "absorb" the "mentality", if you know what I mean. Somehow you seem German to me. Let's put it this way, German and your personality and intellect seem to get along really well. Interesting ...

"wir sind nie der gleichen Meinung" is absolutely correct and sounds more natural than "wir sind nie gleicher Meinung". Your German is really good by the way, just by listening to you I would assume that you've lived in Germany for some years

If the point of learning languages is to be able to connect with other people what is the point of learning german because isn’t standard german a second language for all people from Germany who would all rather speak in their dialect, and so if you do move to Germany you would need to learn both?

Hi, im a medical student in Portugal, first of all, super impressed with your flawless portuguese accent. Im starting my fifth year of six years of medicine and my idea was to start learning german so I can move there as it was always my dream to live in Berlin. Do you think two year is enough time to reach B2 level? Or should I shoot my goals for more like 3 year? :/

Being a faily hight intermediate speaker with a ton of listening experience can also be highly frustrating, because you have really good skills for vocabulary recognition, but much weaker recall and slightly off grammar. Mandarin is kind of easy in that you don't have to deal with a huge amount of synonyms and verb tenses are easy to pick up. Most nouns do not have a plural/singular differentiation. However speaking with correct tones can be hard because it has to be kind of unconscious for you to sound naturally speaking.

hola elysse! :) cooles video. do you prepare for your lessons? since you decide on a topic, i was wondering if you, like, go through vocab beforehand so you can move through it more fluently or do you just show up with what is already in your brain? may be you don't do this anymore, but did you do it at some point? when you had a more basic level of german. i'm mexican and i'm learning german but i get sooo discouraged when i lack very basic vocabulary. at the same time, i feel it's not very realistic to think i can really prepare for spontaneous conversations, lol. graciasss :) 💖

„Wir sind nie der gleichen Meinung“ is what I as a native speaker would say too. Or I would could use the word „einig“ (adjective for „having the same opinion“ or „united“): „Wir sind uns nie einig“. There is also the verb „sich einigen“ (to reach an agreement): „Wir können uns nie (auf etwas) einigen.“

I so admire how you approach the different languages you learn, but lately with your videos I'm having to tell myself I can't randomly start German with a priority language, another one to focus on, and a third one I know I want to develop in the near future haha. Loved the video!

The B2 rant really hit home for me with French. Even though I've been living here for over a year now as a foreign student, the whole frustration of not truly being at the point where you can freely express yourself without constant doubt and feeling like there's still so much more that you need to learn.

I think as well knowing two languages already before French makes me even more aware of the fact that that "very advanced" is achievable and also constantly being surrounded by other second language French speakers who speak better than me. And to be 100% honest, it can be so tiring to feel "stupid" when speaking but also not being able to escape the language either.

But the way, you've been able to do so much of this through self-study alone is super inspiring!! :)))
