Before getting started, you'll need to gather a few tools. A screwdriver, wire cutters, voltage meter, and a ladder. Your ceiling light comes with all the necessary hardware for the installation; including screws, wire nuts, and the canopy.

Ceiling lights come in two basic styles: flush mount and semi-flush mount. Flush mount fixtures are mounted flush with the ceiling for a more low profile design. While semi-flush mount ceiling lights hang down a bit. Semi-flush designs include a short downrod which lowers the light.

In today's video, we have decided to install a semi-flush mount ceiling light. However, the steps and principles for both types are the same.

With electricity, it's always safety first. Before beginning your installation, make sure the power to the ceiling junction box is turned off at the breaker box and your light switch is in the off position. Your voltage meter will confirm the power is off.

Your ceiling junction box should have three wires. A white wire, a black wire, and a copper ground wire. To begin, lift the fixture and screw in the mounting plate around the electrical box. Wrap the copper ground wire from your fixture around the grounding screw on the junction box. Tighten the screw, the connect the wire's end to the junction box ground wire.

Next, strip around half an inch of insultation from the white and black wires on your fixture using your wire cutters. Use the included twist-on connectors to join the white and black wires to their counterparts.

Carefully tuck the wires into the junction electrical box before securing the canopy. With the canopy secure, you can then secure any glass elements your light may include, such as shades or diffusers. Finally, install your light bulbs if needed.

With your light installed, it is time to turn the power back on and enjoy your new ceiling light design.
