Steam will and already releases updates directly for the Dock separately, the thing is much more than a USB stand. Don't be mad sir, not in bad meaning - but you're talking nonsenses. If I invest (already on the way) in the best type, it's no problem to buy ORIGINAL accessories... I'd be a stupid if I buy anything else.

Yea like you I feel the same on the official dock. It works as intended agreed but my use case its not holding up.
But I completely understand as a consumer this was were valve intended to make a profit per unit sold I went in knowing that but still feel very underwhelmed with its actual support.

Bro screw all those docks especially jsaux... never going with a 3rd party brand again... I had to return a jsaux dock and now I have to return a second one... they are hot garbage, literally. The jsaux m.2 dock got super hot and over heated my steam deck. Yup... no thanks. I'll pay the $90 bucks for the official valve dock.

I also found the Dell Thunderbolt docks and similar ones a while ago, though they all share the flaw of needing an external power brick. I wish there was a smaller one with lower usb-c supplied power, so it isn't practically glued to the desk. I found a usb4 one that seems discontinued sadly.

one thing thats not mentioned here is that the official steam deck dock fits into the carrying case that comes with the steam deck, while most 3rd party docks are too big.

I respectfully disagree. I have an ivolor dock and for now that's fine but valve has a history of supporting things with software updates for along time even after they've discontinued them. We don't know what these other companies may or may not do

My ideal dock would have amongst all the other stuff like a display port and USB 3, an additional 2 USB C's combined PD & Data, all of these docks use up the USB C just for charging its capable of so much more and with so many new peripherals being USB C you are faced with the choice of Charge, or USB C peripheral. as a quick example I have NReal AR glasses which are powered by the device you are plugged into as they have no internal battery. using it with the steam destroys battery time i know there are split usb leads that would do the job but we are talking about Docks.

You seem to be missing the point of the steam deck dock. It supports dual displays and has first party firmware updates straight from valve. Also, third party docks tend to have compatibility issues.

I hummed over whether to get a third party vs official dock and ultimately went for the official one. Not because it offers any particularly meaningful differences but just because it's first party and I already felt like my 64GB deck was a steal. Can definitely see why people would get a third party one, they're 99% the same and ultimately the point of the steam deck is for it to be an "open" product that works with as much as possible.

I’ve heard in a YT video, that some docks may damage the SteamDecks battery… Similar issuses were reported years ago with the Nintendo Switch and third party power adapters. Apparently Power Delivery ports are not always made the same…

What’s your take on this?

If you add up the price of a third party hub + 45w charger and usb-c cable, its pretty much the same as the cost of the official steam deck dock (that comes with a charger and cable).

I don’t consider the Steam Deck Dock to be a waste of money. It comes with first party updates. it comes with a charger. And most importantly, it’s supports dual monitors. I feel like that last one is one everyone keeps missing. I keep going to different reviews were they say I can get a cheaper product on Amazon but those only support one monitor….

Not a bad Vid but I thought you would have gone deeper into comparing the Docks up against one another. I am (wow) just like you. I play my Steam Deck Docked more than on the Go. And used the same exact Dell Dock (as you) that I found for $5 at a thrift Store. Its amazing Like you said Audio out and also charges the Deck. I did get the official Steam Deck Dock. The reason was that at the time The shipping for the Jsaux was 2 weeks the same as the valve and that was the only one that I wanted over the Offical dock. Also, the Dock is officially supported by Valve and is updated to include more support and features as time goes on. This is all handled through Steam and all the user needs to hit update. With other 3rd parties you'll need to go through the downloading and installing process which may include jumping into desktop mode. This may be to cumbersome for most users. Also, the Dock does come with the same power cable that the Steam Deck comes with so I like you said no need to unplug and replug.

@AKhan-2024
@AKhan-2024 - 27.10.2022 17:57

I agree with your complaints. I would add not to buy any dock that is only good for the Steam Deck, find one you can use with your phone, laptop, and deck then add a small stand or case.

The only reason Switch Dock was okay was because the console had it included in the price and package.

What I would like to see is the mCable used with steam + a dock. Does it take some of the load off the deck? Now if that was built into the steam deck dock or had additional storage built in, then I would buy it.

Add: I hope Valve doesn't do what Nintendo did and release an update that bricks people's deck because they used a third party dock. That's one reason why I am worried about non-oem docks.

That Dell you have believe it or not is the one that can connect it to the (Nreal air augmented glasses) with the steam deck I can plug the steam deck into it and plug in a controller and have the glasses plugged into that Dell and can just lay on the couch without even touching the steam deck and watch my gameplay using the glasses no monitor needed in this gaming session the glasses can go up to around 95 Hertz or so so if you're in desktop mode you can go past 60 in the glasses
