K M Nanavati was a responsible Indian Navy Senior Officer. Taking a service weapon with him to confront P B Ahuja was a first indication of his intention to use it on him. Secondly, being a trained Navy Officer in use of firearms he should have exercised great care. In the Armed Forces ( of which I was also a member) “dropping” a weapon out of hands is a punishable neglect. Yet, KMN dropped it in front of Ahuja. There are no eye witnesses to corroborate the scene where KMN and Ahuja got into a struggle during which bullets went off. Yes, accidentally one bullet could go after which a victim cannot struggle further and two more bullets going off accidentally is not tenable. Carrying a weapon itself proves intentional to use it and KMN’s blood was boiling due to his wife’s affair when he went to Ahuja. KMN went with gun the intention to use it if required but a defiant Ahuja cunning words “do I have marry every woman I sleep with” may have superheated KMN’s blood and he shot him not once but three times. Clearly KMN is guilty of first degree murder. Public sympathy saved him. Governors have the powers to pardon any offence. The then Governor pardoned him due to overwhelming public sympathy. I was 15 years old when this happened and followed this case through the weekly by name BLITZ. The case was talk of the town nationwide. All along my opinion was same as I presented above even in my teens. Murder and rape are unpardonable offences.
