Wow! I needed this advice. Instagram is such a powerful tool. I've started using boost app social lately to enhance my profile, and it's pretty amazing.

I clicked on this video expecting to be told to start making shorts/videos. I was pleasantly surprised to find good advice on how to grow as a photographer.

Nicely said .. Get specific with knowing and identifying your style/niche... Get organized with realistic, measurable and obtainable goals. Stay motivated with reviewing your own work and those of your favorite photographers, have fun and document your progress on your path to success.

Is it worth starting a new instagram from scratch these days after being off the platform for over a year? I deleted my account a while ago as instagram was affecting my mental health, not sure if its worth giving it another go again for my photography.

Here's an even better goal - make 2023 the year you leave Instagram and everything to do with those scumbags at Meta.

This is the simplest yet most powerful way to get better, Mark! Instead of doing it yearly, we can make a note of doing this exercise quarterly - that way, we won't just be tracking our work but getting better at the same time by studying other photographers' work. Thank you so much for this advice!

Quintessentially I need to invest more time and money to get to unfamiliar epic locations during epic light. That's what it all boils down to. Nice exercise though.

This is probably a good exercise to do once a while, in general. However, it's not going to change the fact that IG tweaks the last couple of years have been REALLY bad for photographers. Unless you are willing to spend a vast amount of money boosting your posts, and you sink down to doing stupid non-photography-related things (create reels), barely anyone will see your work. Hence you will see ZERO growth. Even your own followers are barely presented your work. Unless you have 10k followers or more, even a "good" post (interesting high quality photo) will only be presented to 10-20 % of the people who have selected to follow you. So unless you've already have a large amount of followers, it makes no sense at all to put effort into IG in 2023, as a photographer.

I always enjoy watching your presentations Mark and have done for some time now. This particular subject however makes it challenging in maintaining composure. I thought I’d take my time in writing this comment so it doesn’t appear to reflect being triggered too much 😂. Without further ado, Instagram would have to be one of the worst ongoing experiences I’ve ever had while residing on earth. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to find the right words to describe why this is. My love for photography has definitely taken a few hits from this but I’m dealing with it.

I’m currently building a website with an online store to try and sell some of my work. It’ll probably take a few months to complete, as it’s technically by far the most difficult challenge I’ve ever attempted. Finishing it will constitute success for me regardless of where it goes after that. If my Instagram account ends up gaining some traction because of it, that’s fine. Having said that, I’ve paid money in the past to promote my work on Instagram only to gain a few fake followers and likes. I think this is scandalous.

Thank you for another informative and well-thought-out video. However, have you looked at Vero? It's a much better platform for photographers. Instagram is focusing on reels and videos and the algorithm thing is so frustrating. Vero posts everything in the order it was posted by the photographer, no algorithm, you see what you want, not what it wants you to see or is paid for you to see. It's worth taking the time to see it. Happy New Year, looking forward to more of your great videos in the future.

Hi Mark - Totally unrelated question... I just updated the OS on my iMac to Monterey and the display seems to have changed. It is much brighter than before (either that or I'm going crazy!). I've noticed that you use as an iMac as well and I'm curious what Color Profile you use on your mac for editing with Lightroom, etc. Thanks!

Happy New Year Mark! I always enjoy your videos. I have never thought of approaching Instagram in this particular way. Throughout the year, I will take screenshots of different photos I see and like on Instagram and organize an "album" on my phone and have a private Pinterest page where I will "pin" different photos I like, but never the next step of being strategic and writing down the "why" I like this photo. So thanks for the great idea. Have a fantastic year!

Happy New Year Mark! You are one of my inspirational YT'ers. You give me tech and psych tips in every episode. Keep 'em coming. Although I think the world of your work, I still want TCU to win. I am a native Tarheel-American (born, bred, alum-the whole schmeer), but have lived in Fort Worth since 1994 and pay some attention to the Horned Frogs. I was thrilled to see your win over OSU.

Thank you for all you do Mark, I hope you have a fabulous new year and 2023 brings you all you hope for. I have really struggled with Instagram, to the point where I actually closed my account! Do you honestly believe it’s still a worthwhile platform? How do you get around the cropping of photos that doesn’t seem to allow you to post an image as it was meant to be portrayed? Perhaps it’s just me missing the point somehow, if so I’d really like to know.

This video is one of the reasons why I follow you Mark. You teach not only about photography but also take it more in depth or should I say take up subjects from behind the scenes to help others progress in their photography journey. Cannot thank you enough for valuable information like this. I myself have only just stared with a Facebook page for my photography this month (Dec 22). I liked your idea in this video so maybe I might link the fb page to instagram next year... happy new year to everyone and looking forward to more helpful videos from yourself Mark. 😃👍

Happy New Year Mark. Your channel has been great this year- I really look forward to Wednesdays to see what you have posted. I enjoy your teaching philosophy and vibe of the channel. You are obviously talented but don’t remind the audience of that and make the videos all about yourself- just good advice and tips. Looking forward to next year!

I state the 'goal" or desire as I AM rather than I will, or I shall. If I say "I am" then it feels as if it is taking place each time, I pick up a camera!
