Business Recorder breaks down issues facing Pakistan's pharma sector

Pakistan’s pharmaceutical sector is suffering through a crisis, and it’s not just because of the high costs of production.

Some of it has to do with what the sector calls ‘overregulation’ in price determination that bars them from passing on the cost to the consumer, effectively paving way for spurious and smuggled drugs to penetrate the market. This, the industry argues, is not only a disservice to patients but also to Pakistan’s economy that will eventually suffer as companies pack up their bags and leave.

Business Recorder (Digital) Reporter Bilal Hussain, who has covered the sector for a number of years, explains the dire situation Pakistan finds itself in when it comes, effectively, to the healthcare and patient care sector.
