I used to do most my trips solo but am in 70’s now so advise traveling with a friend. Go riding smaller trips first to see if your riding styles agree and if things annoy you exponentially them. Most people will compromise if reasonable expectations.last year my friend and I did 3000km over 2 weeks and did 200 to 400 km per day parked up about 5.00 and started at 10.00 and had break days. Had a ball. We had a rough plan and booked hotels 2 days ahead, in Spain and Portugal. One day of rain.

Starting to plan a trip with my family to go from Albuquerque, NM to middle of nowhere BC, Canada to find a cousin I haven't seen in 15 years. Taking my mom, wife and infant son. I'll be the only rider and my family will be in a F150 with trailer hitch carry rack for my bike. They don't have motorcycles but like road trips. I love riding through the Rocky Mountains on small roads and dirt roads. I like all weather conditions and have only traveled like this alone. This will be my first time with a support vehicle and nearby help. I'll be planning some camping and hotels. Interstate highways will be used only when unavoidable. I don't like going fast in any conditions. I've never even topped out my big Beemer, got uncomfortable at 120mph. I hope to stay in the mountains as much as possible. I've definitely over packed. On a trip from NM to Yellowstone NP I took too much for a weeklong ride. It didn't create too many problems and I used all that I had but it got funny when I saw a moose. We don't have moose in NM. We'll we have one right now Marty The Moose. He's new and just showed up last year from Colorado. Anyway, just above Steamboat Lake I saw a moose close to the road and wanted a pic. I started a U-turn and tried to take a dab on the inside foot. I caught my leg under my saddle bag and pulled myself right off of the bike. Luckily the pavement ended in a few hundred yards and there was no traffic at 6 am. The bike was 600lbs empty and with all my gear I couldn't pick it back up so, I had to unload the entire bike and then repack it right there in the middle of the road. needless to say, when I got my Sh*t together the moose was just a tiny brown dot facing away from me when I snapped the pic. This and riding stuck inside deep ruts for a while was the worst of it really. Just something to laugh at.

Only time I ride in a group is day trips, charity rides or going to the Cold Kiwi rally with friends - all of which are only a few hours at the most. Even then, one trip to the Cold Kiwi I was heartily sick and tired of the riding style of one of the other riders within an hour and a half and the rest of the trip was not particularly pleasant for me. I'm pretty sure that if I were touring a whole country or continent, I'd want to be doing it alone unless I knew the other rider(s) extremely well and knew that their riding, camping, touring etc styles were all compatible (and who the hell knows anyone else that well?)

Kiwi here - pissing myself laughing at you saying "God damn you, New Zealand Post" - a sentiment that we all share. The only postal service I've experienced that's worse is US Postal Service - they make NZ Post seem affordable.

After trying to ride with several other riders I’ve learned my trips are more fun either with my Wife on the back or ALONE!
I can take all the time I want, or take a leak and jump right back in the road. If tired I’ll even take a Car nap at a rest stop, so being alone is a lot less stressful.

On My first trip from south to north Ca and back. i took a lot of stuff with me. My second trip it was less stuff from CA to Texas. Third trip from Texas to Boston and back to Texas less stuff. I am planning for next year to visit south carolina. Florida. Montana south Dakota. Idaho. Washington. I'm new at this but i love it. Riding alone i just need to take care of myself nobody else.

I would not go mote than 400 km daily. 600 and more daily on bike is not fun ride.
In car 800 in a day is ok. But on motorbike max 350 till 400.

I rode from Adelaide south Australia to Canberra and back on a gs500 I payed $450 for. I had the standard tool kit, Puncture repair kit, a bicycle pump, a swag and only about $450. The bloke I rode with was on a ktm 640 adventure. He had all the gear. I had a kmart jacket, riggers gloves and a helmet I got for free. Honestly I think my bike was a better choice for the trip. The parallel twin did it easier. The ktm also had a few problems alongthe way. But even though we had very different approaches we both made it there and back. I've known him for 32 years and it was a great trip. Probably the best long trip I've done. I took the bare minimum and it was great. I've done other trips on bigger supposedly better bikes with more stuff and more money but this trip went really well. I sat that little 500cc twin on 6000 rpm at 120kmph all the way there and all the way back. It's fine, it loved it and still runs fine years latter.

This is one of the best videos on planning motorcycle tours I saw and heard!!! To spend this 10' can help to avoid hours and days of pain and frustration! The topic of "having no plan means, to be everywhere and nowhere at the same time" is a great thought! The absolute highlight of riding experiences is the following: "A calamity is the sum of smaller mistakes, that meet each other in a perfect circumstancially shitstorm!" ... never heard this item better explained. It.s gorgeous! Thanks a lot for this kind of thinking!! Kind regards, Henry

Group rides only slow you down and in my opinion make you lose focus and concentration. You’re better going with 1-2 like minded people with the same riding skills as you that you’ve bonded with and ridden with many many times before, to the stage you can almost read each other and understand that you are evenly matched riders with pretty much the same goals. When I go to Europe with my mate, i know it’s guaranteed to be good, add someone else into that mix and it upsets the dynamic. This year we’ve added someone else to that group who has ridden religiously with us for over a year every weekend, 3-400 mile weekend runs, we all have the same comms, we all communicate and we all keep each other in check. I’d much rather that than a group of 10 people who just fancy a trip.

Went through Africa in a 2 CV in the 70ties. Draged along to many spares. Overloaded broke a spring in Angola. Well we made it to Cape Town never the less but would have been more fun and less tense with less weight.

Been on several cross country trips on my motorcycles, some with other riders and some by myself. Personally, I prefer the freedom of riding by myself, but sharing hotel expenses is nice. My most common mistake is packing too much clothes which end up getting shipped back home halfway through the trip.

quick tip. change your key light to the same side as that background light. it tricks the brain into thinking the background light is what is casting light on your face... it just feels wrong to see it switched like you have it. Great video. I wish I was brave enough to ride a bike. Seems fun af.

I ride alone as I'm selfish and can't be arsed to fix other people's problems due to lack of mechanical skill or I'll prepared bikes. You meet more people as a lone rider as people are not afraid of a single bloke.

Great vid. I'm mostly a solo rider but end up in groups from time to time. The thing I try to remember is to ride my ride. I'm pretty adaptable to people who ride slower than me, or want to ride less technical stuff than I do, but I simply never let anyone make me go faster than I want to, or over some obstacle I don't want to.

I was invited by a group of guys to go on a 4 day trip in my country. I knew it was a long ride and that we would be covering roughly 500 miles per day. But once the trip began, I found out that the group didn't stop for meals; only gas and snacks until we reached our evening destination. They also didn't stop for pictures or sight-seeing. I realized very quickly that this kind of travel wasn't really for me. I spoke up at the end of Day 2, expecting to leave the group and meet them at the end of the 3rd day by going my own way and taking my time. To my surprise, others in the group were feeling the same way and they remapped our journey to leave time for more stops and meals. I was thanked for speaking up and the rest of the trip was great. I look forward to traveling with them again, but now I know I'm not a "Mile Muncher" at heart.

First time viewer. Fantastic way to meet you. I definitely do better by myself than with anyone. So much easier to stop when you want or roll on if necessary.
I usually try to stick to about 350 mi a day or less. On my last trip, I got way too aggressive and had four or five days over 500 mi. You're just doing work at that point. Saw some cool stuff, but only at 80 mph.
Subscribe. I'm going to go see what other videos you have.

Well have been riding 4yrs now and have got myself a nice bike now, a very quick Kawasaki ZX-6R G1- 98 I have had it just over a year now and have loved restoring it back to almost new looking, new fairings, new paint job and a very nice looking livery, i'm always getting a good feed back for how my bike looks. So yes getting a bike has been good for my mental health, It's been expensive but it has given me something to do and now be very proud of myself.

When we found the group I was laughing about the experience. The other rider, he was mad at the leader of the group to the point he assaulted the leader. So, I am back to solo riding.
