There is a lot of advice out there about how to get the best night of sleep. But the fact that you can't sleep might not be your fault. It turns out, night owls have an internal clock that functions differently. Forcing them to wake up early could have serious health consequences.

Science Insider tells you all you need to know about science: space, medicine, biotech, physiology, and more.

Following is a transcript of the video:

There is plenty of advice for how to improve your sleep. Go to bed at the same time. Avoid digital screens after dark. And don’t hit snooze. But it all comes down to the same assumption: That YOU’RE doing something wrong. When, in fact, it may not be your fault, at all.

Inside practically every organism on Earth there’s a clock that keeps order. Known as the circadian rhythm. For humans, it’s located in the part of our brains called the hypothalamus. And while it’s most famous for controlling our sleep cycles… it’s also responsible for helping primary organs like the brain, heart, and lungs, work in harmony. But not everyone’s circadian rhythm is the same. Night owls, for instance, generally feel tired later than early birds. Often because they produce high amounts of the sleep hormone, melatonin, later at night.

And for most of human history that didn’t matter — since night owls could protect their tribes from nocturnal predators or their cities from cunning conquerors — but society has MADE it a problem in recent decades. An estimated 80% of Americans follow daily schedules that fall between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Yet, nearly a third of the population considers themselves night owls. Which means they’d be better off with a schedule that looks more like this. This phenomenon is called social jetlag. It’s like the jetlag you feel after a long plane trip… but worse because it doesn’t disappear after a few days.

And social jetlag is taking its toll on night owls of the world. Because, even if you get the recommended amount of sleep… knocking your circadian rhythm out of whack has consequences. For example, one study found that for every hour your circadian rhythm is out of syn …your risk of obesity increases by 33%. Also increasing your risk of the many health complications associated with obesity. And the problem isn’t just a physical one. In another study, people whose circadian rhythms were more than 2 hours off… reported notably more severe symptoms of depression.

And since your circadian rhythm tends to shift as you age… social jetlag is especially apparent in teens. In fact, the CDC warns that most public schools across America start too early, before 8:30. Which, according to the nonprofit “Rand Corporation,” is costing the country $9 billion a year from mainly lost academic performance and car crashes from tired teens behind the wheel. Luckily, the circadian rhythm isn’t set in stone. Turns out, it’s largely triggered by light signals that strike your eye. So, when you first wake up, get outside and soak up some morning sun… or if that’s out of the question, make sure your home is well lit. It might just brighten your morning a little more.

It's difficult when you like to get up early but your job goes late. So I'm usually up between 6-8am but I don't get off work until 8-9pm, then eat dinner, wind down, bed at 10-11pm. Oh and I "sleep" for 9hrs as it takes me an hour to get to bed. So if I go to bed at 11pm, I'm asleep by 12am and up at 6am= 5½-6hrs of sleep every night. Yet I want and need 8. It's not fun!

Or society could let us night owls work later in the morning. I literally feel like there’s going to come a point where I just can’t get up for work anymore cause it’s too early, the winter also makes it worse.

I'm Autistic+ADHD and I simply do not respect anything that tries to wake me up before 09 AM. Elementary, primary, middle chools? I had more missed days than anyone else. Jobs? I will not attend your 08 AM meeting thank you. I did my high school at a night college, I did my undergrad degree at a night/remote college, I did my technical degree at a night college. The post-grad of my choosing was really interesting, but 07 AM? lol no
People get even more annoyed at my behaviour cus they know it doesn't cause performance issues, it just causes "but I want things done my NORMAL neurotypical way!!!" issues.
I got a job with an American company recently (I'm from overseas) and because it's remote, they asked me to do 09 AM to 5 PM of their time, which translates to 11 AM to 7 PM in my country. Words cannot express how delighted I am. It's the first time in my life where I actually feel ANXIOUS to start working.

I'm a streamer, content creator, full time student and full time employee who works 4PM-12AM. I am frequently interested in the difference between night owls and early birds! Although I work evenings, I do have the option on my personal time to go to bed around 1AM directly after my shift and wake up fairly early (10am-ish). However, because that is extremely difficult for me and will cause me extreme tiredness near the end of my shift, I frequently choose to stay up until 6-9 hours after work and sleep until it's time to go to work the following evening at 4PM. I am unsure about whether not I want to lean into this habit, or commit to early rising and staying awake for 14-16 hours with no naps. what do you think?

This is somthing that always really angers me, cause of how naturally if I go to bed at around 2:30 AM, I can get only 6 hours of sleep and be completely fine, but because of work and classes, I am forced to get up at 6 am, and even with 10 hours of sleep, plus tons of caffeine I will still feel exhausted.

My natural sleep times are from 2am to like 9 or 10.
So obviously in high school I got so intensely suicidally depressed that I would have dropped out, had my parents and teachers not dragged me through the last year. The only reason I even showed up to my graduation was because a family member had travelled two hours to attend, that was it, and I left halfway through because I sincerely did not give a single shit about school.

I would have loved to have gone on to study biology or linguistics, but I made the active choice to survive into my thirties by lack of suicide instead.

I could have been a scientist, but instead I’m just the family disappointment, but at least I’m still alive! 💜

I'll never understand why schools starting absurdly and unhealthily early isn't considered the least bit abusive. When you're start times are harming the growth of your students and causing mental health issues that's pretty bad just saying. It's especially unhealthy for a night owl to be up at that hour because we're simply not programmed to be like that.

Lol... that ain't a "night owl" schedule... I'm up till 4-5 AM but my best schedule is bed at 10AM wake at 4 PM and 8 min nap around 2 hrs before sunset. That way I get sunrise and sunset. Plus access to normal needs mostly.

Im a night owl and I usually go to sleep around 5 to 6am (after all else fails). Sleeping in is considered 12pm otherwise Im up by 9am with just 3 to 4 hours of sleep. I want to day sleep in the summer, and in the winter I don't sleep at all.

I used to think I was a night owl. Fall asleep an hour or so after going to bed at 3am, get up an hour or so after waking at 2pm.
My maternal gramma goes to bed at 11 in the morning, and wakes at 6 at night.

I'm an evening bird, Gramma is an actual owl.

I remember I baby sat my aunt’s dog and I had to wake up at 6:30 AM for a few days to let him out. It felt like my body was twice as heavy. Versus waking up at 8:30 AM to go to school isn’t as bad. I usually wake up around 11 AM or 12 PM with no obligations and fall asleep between 1-3 AM.

Used to have to get up at like 6am in the morning for school and unfortunately nobody else is awake, so cant turn any lights on and in the winter time especially, had to leave the house and walk in practically night time to catch the bus, and then youre often at school when its s t i l l dark out. 😔 and then morning class teachers insist on keeping lights off.

I have trouble waking up before 12 noon and I have never been able to sleep before 4am. I'm happy as I am and I have no desire to change, but society makes it so damn hard to be a night owl in an early bird world. Everything closes way too early and the reason for depression is the loneliness - everyone else is asleep while we're awake and alert. You can't even play music or do housework for fear of waking up the normies. You end up being trapped in dark silence for hours every night.

Remember one sr two studies of say for example the obesity rate thing, is not proof. Also a lot of teens stay up not because it being nature, but because we want to continue whatever activity we are doing. A non “night owl” can stay up to much and get there body’s used to it, making it so the only reason they become “night owls” is because of bad habits. Also a long time ago lookouts like you mentioned had to train themselves to stay up and attentive at those times.
