Problem is area under Gaussian. Or integral of e^-(x^2). Classic solution is to have the integral squared equal to the same but x^2+y^2. Then with the jacobian you get an integral that is easily solvable via inspection or a simple u-sub.

This is actually a quite simple calculus 3 question. All you really need to know is your formula for Gaussians or if you want to prove it you need to know how to change into polar coordinates and use the jacobian then you would use a basic u-sub to receive the correct answer

Love this scene. As smart as she is, she's still a child. He was expecting an adult's reaction: An adult would've bragged and showed off; she had no ambition to do so, just innocent of the desire for recognition like the "pompous" professor and her equally pompous grandmother. I think I the professor was humbled though, whereas the grandmother's ego and pride were unfortunately further inflated.

Those 'mistakes' in the equation were actually intentional. The professor wanted to test Mary's skills and see if she could spot and solve those errors correctly. It's a brilliant way to challenge students and encourage critical thinking. Mary definitely proved herself by identifying and fixing those mistakes flawlessly.

I never understood why the grandmother calls this "some random, massive problem", when it's neither random nor massive. This is one of the most famous calculus problems in existence, and everybody with an undergrad level math education or above will have seen it and learned how to solve it, as well as know about its significance and some of its applications. It's practically as famous as the constant pi.

The professor intentionally introduced a simple and obvious error and everyone in the room knew it, grandmother included.

Her reaction is out of character for a mathematician, she should have called it what it is: not a massive random problem but rather a silly little prank. The child's reaction ("smartass") is accurate.
