simply put
we need to adapt and build better traps, likely with entrance corridors and tricking the AI with closing doors/gates

Building a Thatcher ramp inside, put it on low health and then shoot it when the dino walked in? Might make you get hit 1 or 2 times but it should be fine

Put th3 f3nce foundations to the sides of your trap, and have the begining of the trap start off with foundations only, so it fools the a.i. pathfinding. Should work with some testing

I personally love this change because I always found it a pain transporting dinos because there was a chance they could fall off a cliff or get stuck in a hole or wall, but now with this, we don’t need to worry about it as much anymore

Ark Survival Ascended is made in Unreal Engine 5. While I didn't ever test pathfinding in UE5, I have worked quite a while with UE4 and I can share some facts, maybe they match with implementation made in UE5. Well, in UE4 there is a thing called navmesh. You can imagine it like a layer of paint that dictates where an NPC can and cannot walk. Being like a layer of paint, you have to put it on an actual surface. That means this will primarily work on ground, since air and water are not actual surfaces (walk-wise), but more like volumes. The reason is that by default, in order to make a navmesh, you basically take a full 2D map of the ground, project the objects that are staying on the ground and grey out the areas that are projected because of course, you do not want a NPC to walk in an area that is occupied by a rock or by a tree etc. That means, NPCs that walk on ground will be affected. Now, although it is trickier, of course you can also make a similar system for air and water, but seems like it is not implemented yet in Ascended. Coming back to ground areas: there are different ways to project an object on a 2D surface: the easy dummy one is to simply take the shape of the base of the object (the part directly touching ground). A more correct option for this game would be to take the largest section of the object. It really depends how they implemented it. If they implemented it the easy way, we MIGHT bypass it for some creatures: for example we make a large C shape out of ceilings and one of them is snapped to a column. This way, the base of the assembly is only the base of the column (cause only that touches the ground), meaning that the dino will hopefully not see the ceilings as obstacles. Might be an idea.

I don't use traps so I don't know how their a I is for that, but their pathing is still pretty trash in my world. I literally havy creatures on follow as i cross a wide, very deep river. The dinos are in open water and keep swimming back to land then turning around and repeating 5 times each.

i used to tamed without trap and it was the best day of ark, i remember going to tame high level rex with my friend, that was so much fun, but then we all learn about trap, and it's hard to enjoy going glitchless when you know there's such an easy way availlable

“Less creativity”
That’s not even remotely true. People were doing the same trapping methods for the entirely of ASE. Gateway cages and doorframe cages still reined supreme when you wanted to tame something. ASA at least is the same.

The new path finding will make trapping more difficult and require more innovation. If something isn’t by the water, you can’t just build a trap on a raft. If you want to get a breeder started, you’ll want to leave that trap there anyways. Players will have to think about their traps rather than use the exact same blueprint over and over and over again.

Never been a big fan of trapping in pve (personal preference) because I enjoy the thrill of being chased while trying to tame then giving chase at the last bit of the tame, I'm an rp guy so I like immersion, I think it's good because it makes people more creative in how they tame a Dino rather then running it into a trap and just tranq, like I personally like to set up bear traps and trip wires and stuff then go for the tame

Try having a flyer follow a flyer..
The follower flies left, right, up, down, flies past you, turns around and flies head on at you then gets left behind because its flying the wrong way and it dissapears do to that distance dino visibility BS..

I play on the Switch version of Ark, so might not be the same version. Hadn't played the game in years, like a good 8+ years or so, back when I could play it on my computer at max settings, then the devs broke the game with a patch that made even at lowest settings, the game unplayable.

Anyway, on the latest Switch version of the game I went to go tame a frog. I like them as pets. Anyway, I built a structure, 2x1 wooden foundations with a ramp right up into just the ground level of my pen. Used doorways as the "walls". I brought a frog over to it and I ran through. The frog however stopped on the ramp to try attacking me, but due to being on the ramp, the frog's attacks were aimed into the air. I really should redo that ramp as it should be done, going up to the roof level and dropping into it.

Also noticed that the above mentioned structure has snakes just go around it as well, which at the time, I was not aware of the pathing changes. Thank you for this video.

They'll eventually fall in, don't let them keep a distance, get them attacking toy right before the drop, and they'll fall in and drop.

i wonder.. do the new Bob DLC carts work the same as rafts? (or can you maybe build a split up mobile trap using 2 of them)..
obviously you can use 1 cart for a mobile doorstop wall to close a trap if you're able to block the view towards the dino puling the cart
on that same note, can you use traincarts as reusable movable traps for various set spawnpoints? (or will the scaffolding block out all spawns in the area)
2 sciences i'm sure you're the perfect person for ^^

half a year later: AI is stupid as always, dinos get stuck in doors, trees, stones, in walls, in each other cluttering, fall through roofs, sometimes have huge delay or do not react at all....and about the end of traps: still working :)

A new AI-implemented system that did not change anything for the good but for sure eats up more resources than some simple but effective scripts.

Ok so I may have a solution for the tracking . I been doing this since I started paying which wasn't long ago and just now looking at more videos. But the pitfall trap is what I use, only I did t like the fact that they would run around it or you would run into something else exiting . So what I do is I use a single door structure on one end and wall on top then I build a room so to speak with a door at trap end and an exit door roof walls. And I run through trap into the room. Yes it's more material but it allows you safety and giving the option of it doesn't have to be in a trap for the trap to be useful. More like live bait shooting tranqs from inside, and I even sometimes put walls on the side of where I initially think we will becoming from. So location is another key. I wonder how far it would be willing to go to avoid an obstacle to go around ? But the room works well and well rounded . I caught my first raptor same way really but I used a Cage in center of trap and put a free to wander dodo (3 actually ) in it and it stayed agroed to the from outside the trap will I shoot it from top of ramp. Your just looking for protection from the creature to immobilize. It doesn't have to necessarily be contained to get it.

Ok, so they pathfind around structures.....why not build a small pen for you, three or four sections, so you can shoot at the dino as it attempts to walk around the structure you are surrounded by. A sort of u pattern with walls or you make your trap "thick", like your wall in the simulation, you make it one or two foundations thick and as the dino pathfind around the sides, you can pop to either side of the wall, through the door.
Traps still work, you just need to be smart, also, they still try to eat you through walls, so you can still use baited traps lol

My opinion is, it sucks, why do I say that , because they make it more harder and longer to farm everything including trapping dinosaurs. I LOVED EVOLVED, worked hard for resources, tamed dinosaurs, enjoyed it. Breed and raised dinosaurs, rode dinosaurs , fought the bosses without cheating just enjoyed, but now they have changed cryo , which is harder, when you tame and you don't have cryo yet , you have to walk it across rough terrain which makes it prone to attacks and death. Resources are harder to get and changed the amount you get, remember the oil on Island, lot less nodes and you don't get enough. I could continue about but no point too. I being honest here, I find it less enjoyable and more frustrating to me, and find it hard to press forward, as of late been pushing myself to play , but been going back to evolved and it feels gd. Hope your all being honest about it. Maybe it's just me and age . But I want to enjoy it. Well that's it. It was a good video and keep up the good work . Cheersh

The thing is, the "new" ai only made it harder to trap wild dinos. Your tames still get stuck on every little thing, they still fall through cave walls, and they still get stuck in caves and inside mesh etc. It's been an all around bad experience and the new ai hasn't really solved anything but to make your life more miserable when trying to trap
