I've owned a lot of vinyl and I recently got a record player as a gift from my fiancé. I appreciate the information. I think I'll probably just get a pair of active speakers and call it a day

The part about tube amplifiers or solid state amplifiers are mostly interesting to guitar players, except they only like tube amps lol.

A receiver has a built in tuner for listening to the radio, an integrated amp, which is what I have, has a pre- amp and a power amp. Separates is where the the tuner, pre-amp , and power amp are separate components. I have a Yamaha A-S801.

Do you know if a device exists which can be connected to an amp to transmit music from vinyl/cd… to wireless speakers? If so, any brand recommendation/specs to look for? Thanks for the great channel! Keep it up!

Just too say all that you have explained can also be said for an amp. A reciever is an amp with a tuner in one enclosure

Few different types of solid state, there is class A: completely transistors, lovely little things, unfortunately transistors need .7 amps to actually amplify anything, so a .7 amp bias is created (0 amps in, .7 amps out, 1 amps in, 1.7 amps out) Class A is really inefficient, runs hot, but is really easy when dealing with Total Harmonic Distortion, but like I said, INEFFICIENT!!! Class AB: Has Transistors, and a circuit with a bunch of feedback loops, to amplify the sound below the pickup of the transistors, better about heat, and can handle more amplification without burning out the transistors. CLASS D: Most common in the NEW receivers, and is the ONLY class used in Audio/video receivers, completely digital, pretty much computer at this point, the issue with these is that IT'S DIGITAL!!! OFF, OR ON! Digital struggles to make clean signals, and has more of the noticeable Total Harmonic Distortion, because it's on the minor harmonics instead of the major harmonics, giving it a less warm sound than commonly associated with analog receivers such as class A, and AB. I personally have a Yamaha AVR, and a Kenwood KR series reciever, the difference is instantly noticeable, the Kenwood KR-4140 is a Class AB, and has a clean, warm sound to it, the TSR-7810 has a decent sound, but is lower quality sound.. a kind of digital muddiness for lack of better description. Class A should be INCREDIBLY clean because of the lack of electronics to mess up the signal.

I've owned many receivers from all brands over the years, but my personal favorite is my Sansui 7070 that my dad gave me. Probably the most underrated receiver ever. Have it hooked up to JBL-L19 speakers and a Philips 212 with a rare 4 channel AT Lab Xii-s cart that picks up finer detail with a AT shibata stylus.

My way of looking at it:

1. Receiver - For VHS / DVD + Music
2. Amplifyer: Music
3. Pre Amp: Support to Amp or Reciever with more power.

This way of looking at it works from the 80's and up. In the 70's it was a amp that could recieve radio.
That radio bonus there 80s - 90's brothers also can do, but the destinction between a amp and a reciver were more of: home theater (Reciever) vs home hifi (Amp) settup.

If you have no respect for money, or you just have a abundence of it you can go for Pre Amp HiFi setups.

Well, this is hoe i categorize HiFi gear. And if you have a late 1980's or early 1990's Reciever and connect a HiFi (4 head or more) VHS player with it's dedicated audio out, magic will happen 💛

Radio is obsolete! There is no reason to buy a receiver anymore. Even in 1979 when I got my first real stereo I bought an integrated amp (preamp and amp but no radio tuner) and a separate tuner. That tuner has been stored in its original box for the last 25 years. So get an integrated amp instead of a receiver because they generally sound better and you won't be spending money on a tuner you won't use.

Not "magic", it's effectively a microphone: a magnet inducing current in a coil. There's two magnet-coil pairs and the (also not actual) "magic" of stereo grooves, which is "just" clever geometry, give you the two channels. Almost any hifi set back in the day and even nowadays (for instance the Yamaha A-S301 and their family members) have a phono pre-amp that is more than decent. Of course some turntables do have them too, like the AT-120X USB and the likes. (A possible downside of having a pre-amp in the turntable is that you pay for parts that you effectively don't use)

The receiver vs amp thing is totally just a use case situation. I prefer an ol' 90s digital receiver just for the amount of inputs of anything you'd ever need and more as well as individual bass and treble controls with Dolby options you just don't get anymore. But, that does take a good amount of room. If you just wanted good audio from your PC, or a single device like a modern turntable, oh yeah a small amp is the way to go.

I had always used vintage receivers (The Fisher 125, Hitachi SR-604, etc) but got tired of the aging potentiometers and switches constantly needing attention so last fall I picked up an Onkyo TX-8220 to use with my TT (Pioneer DJ 500PXL), dual cassette deck and cd changer (also both Pioneer) and I've been pretty impressed by it. The "A" speakers are a pair of Fluance SX6W's and I ran wires from the "B" connectors to the high gain audio inputs of a powered 10" Polk Audio subwoofer and it absolutely rocks. The Onkyo accepts banana plugs for all of its speaker terminals which was another plus for me and is how I have it wired. I have many tube radios I've restored to operation for that warm tube sound and someday I'll get a tube amp for my component system but until then I'm very satisfied with my current setup.

some powered speakers don't have a volume control. Therefore if you plug your turntable directly into them as recommended, be prepared to only hear one volume level. Which will eventually drive you mad.

So if I have a record player with a built in pre amp, and just got brand new (passive) speakers for christmas, and I only care about playing vinyl, should I try and return these speakers and get ones with a built in amp? Or are there cheap receiver options if you only have one input you care about?

Or you could have turntable with Phono preamp out, to powered speakers, or a headphone system with a headphone amp to march. That can keep things a modest budget and upgradable with speakers and a receiver or integrated amp and other components later.

Or.. (I'm old and have some vintage (late 80s early 90s, nothing from my first system) gear and some new and always want a full size stack of components.) Integrated amp NAD 3400.

An integrated amplifier is a pre-amp and a power amp in the one unit. A receiver is an integrated amplifier with a built in radio. Is there a difference? Yes. We have a Yamaha A-S701. It has a phono, CD, tuner (radio) and three auxillary inputs. We don't have a tuner and we might not even get one. But we have a record player, CD player, cassette recorder, CD recorder and minidisc recorder. (Song of the day is "Baker Street" by Gerry Rafferty)
