“Shine On You Crazy Diamond” (1975) is a tribute to Syd Barrett, an original member of Pink Floyd, who had a mental collapse and was dismissed (notice the title : the initial letters of the 1st, 3rd and 5th words spell SYD❕).

David Gilmour came up with four notes that became the basis for this tune. Roger Waters thought they conveyed emotions Syd must have been feeling, and penned lyrics about him.

Waters sang lead. He recorded the vocal line over and over again, even killing his voice in the process. That’s why Roy Harper - a close friend of theirs - was brought in for “Have a Cigar” (1975).

On the LP “Wish You Were Here” (1975), this is split into two parts, with “Have a Cigar,” “Welcome to the Machine,” and “Wish You Were Here” in between.

Pink Floyd started performing “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” live over a year before the record was released. Back then, it was known as “Shine On.”

In 1986, Waters left the band. So at consequent shows, they played this with Gilmour on vocals. 💚💎🩷

Best rock and roll band of the past 60 years. Best band to do live concerts and actually sound better in my opinion than the studio original. Best light show of any concert. When all the members pass on they will leave a legacy that won't ever be challenged. Pink Floyd will shine on long after they stop making music

Makes me think of a dear friend who died in 2020. She died of alcoholism. We didn't realize the extent of her disease (and mental illness) until it was too late.
