Google Pixel Fold and The Evolution of Foldable Phones

Am I the only one looking forward to a Global such as in the TV series Earth: Final Conflict?

I don't think companies need to justify a foldable phone. The justification is already there, especially on the tablet variants: More screen real estate. They just need to bring the price down and let the general public actually experience the device. I haven't met anyone, outside of dubious internet commenters, that have actually gone back to a non-folding phone once they've switched.
I think it's just a matter of time before foldables really start taking over. In my opinion, Samsung's Galaxy Fold lineup are the first devices on the market that can really take the place of most of the technology and daily carry items we interact with on a daily basis.
- Smartphone
- Tablet
- E-reader
- PC (External monitor + usb-c hub + keyboard + mouse + Samsung Dex = Great desktop experience for things like Microsoft Office suite, web browsing, file transfer, cloud gaming, etc.)
- Wallet (Samsung Pay literally has no competition as it doesn't need an NFC scanner and works with any old magnetic card reader)

Sorry Google, I look forward for your take on the functionality dept but that bezel is such an eyesore in 2023.

I could have apple or Android, but I will not pay over $700 for any of them.

Samsung Z series are treated as prototype tester even nowadays with extra cost. I have a friend who work at Samsung repair center. Most repair cases are Z series come everyday with dot and line and it cost much than S series to replace the foldable display.

I own the fold 1&2 and I'm done with buying a phone device until these batteries can no longer hold a charge. You guys can chase the phone rainbow all you want it....I'm out.

samsung was de facto the first. they already had ideas, plans and prototypes way back in early 2010s when all the chinese phone brands didn't even exist. the flexpai was just an attempt to be beat samsung as the first on the market. samsung easily could have done the same with a half baked prototype way before flexpai. therefore i don't see the flexpai as a true first foldable phone. just an unfinished product from the laboratory.

Switched back to iPhone for various reasons, but I had a z fold 3. People have to stop saying they're not useful. I actually miss the screen real estate. Even texting and using maps apps are way better on a folding phone. And it immensely shines when reading emails and other work related communications. It's actually too bad that Apple is conspicuously absent in this segment.

I'll wait for version 2.0 🙂

You forgot to talk about the LG Dual screen devices. I only bring this up as you talked about the Microsoft ones that are very similar.

I want a wider outer screen for Pixel Fold, and it appears they will deliver from all the renderings that's been going around online. I've been a Z Fold user these last few years and hate the narrow outer screen.

It seems like they've been trying to push these things forever and they're still only 1% of the global smartphone market, they still feel like an expensive gimmick to me

the side bezel is huge, screen does not open to full, no innovative UI. xiaomi, opo, vivo, Tecno fold all better than this design and not cheap.

I was almost about to purchase the Galaxy z flip 3, but I got the s22 because of the questionable of how durable and reliable are the devices. Because I've heard that they last between 14 to 16 months.

Had Z Fold 1-3, just couldn’t bring myself to buy the Fold 4, so i went back to traditional candy bar style. Heavy, clunky, poor battery, and poor cameras; I thought they would get better over the years and it’s very slightly. I dont have high hopes for the Pixel Fold especially with how expensive it will be and their track records with introducing new devices.
