The "Arnold Classic" was previously named the IFBB Pro Mr Universe, Jim and Arnold changed it to the Arnold in 1989.

This was real good. But Bill Grant was the first high level competitor with striated glutes

Arnold and Jim promoted the Pro World throughout the 80's and rebranded into Arnolds Classic

Hey Nick...find yourself a copy of the book, "Gorilla Suit" by Bob Paris. It is a fascinating glimpse behind scenes of professional bodybuilding...you won't be disappointed.

When i hear the word "classic" Bob Paris is the first image that comes to mind.

Robby Robinson got totally ROBBED at this show. He deserved first place easily (and I think Richie knew this, which is why he looked so surprised when they announced that he won.) Both Robinson and Gaspari were in great condition, , maybe the best condition of their careers,  but the difference was Robby's physique was better..MUCH better. He had a way better upper body than Richie..bigger arms, chest, shoulders, back, a smaller (much smaller) waist, and more impressive ab development. Richie had better legs than Robby and he had those "shredded glutes", but so what..what people want to see in a champion bodybuilder is a superior upper bod. That's much more impressive than "great calves, quads, and hamstrings."

I know you're downplaying the women's bodybuilding contests, but the 1989 Arnold was the year Tanya Knight had to forfeit her 1st place title and prize money. She had cheated on the drug test in another IFBB contest. That was pretty significant.

Prior to watching your videos, I never followed bodybuilding before (I felt the sport/artform and the men involved were kinda... strange) but I binged through a lot of your vids and I like how informative and entertaining your vids are, while presenting the material in an impartial and unbiased manner. hey Nick i attended this show. actually watched the prejudging with Vince Taylor still an amateur at that time and one of the most humble bodybuilders i've known. from the audience i can concede that Bob Paris looked terrific and should have been top 3. an unknown bodybuilder named Renel Javier was shredded including his glutes. never had seen that before as an Ohio bodybuilder.. also, the women's champion was a doll named Tonya Knight who tested positive and lost her title. i think it was handed then to Laura Creavalle (sp?)

he looks shit. Bob Paris along with Frank Zane, Arnold, Sergio Oliva is what bodybuilding was about and SHOULD be about to this day. the only thing Rich did here was up his dosages compared to everyone else. Congrats

89 was the 1st Arnold classic in name only. Arnold and Jim promoted the show for a few years prior to n 1989 it was called the World Pro bodybuiding championship and it was pro am. Great channel btw.
