I have zero appetite in the mornings, beer helps a lot with that, a pint of yummy beer and in 30 minutes I'm ready to eat, if I however start with coffee it takes me 2-3 hours to feel hungry. It gives a little buzz which makes it easier to live.

There is something comforting in the simplicity and warmth of oatmeal, especially on a cold winter's or fall's day. I like mixing maple syrup or honey into mine, and I use milk for it as well!

I eat oatmeal porridge every day winter and summer for breakfast. "Sticks to the ribs' as my grandmother would say and very much part of my Scottish ancestry.

I've randomly stumbled across your videos and I have to say they are an absolute gift to the world. I love not just learning the recipes but the stories and historical accuracies of how people lived.
Thank you for everything you do!

The "beef broth" must have been their version of Consome (Mexican dish), which is a simple beef broth with some kind of grain (I dont know what it's called in English), and a small amount of shredded beef, and it's awesome!!!

When you said breakfast I imagined real breakfast foods like cold cut meats; salami, mortadella, prosciutto, different cheeses, bread, maybe a frittata if you're really hungry

not "pancakes", sausage, bacon, and "oatmeal"; these are like movie foods, sometimes I forget anglos actually eat this stuff

What i find interesting is how alot of the richers families breakfasts would consist of lese healthy foods like saussages, bacons, eggs etc. But the poorer families simply eating cheap wholegrains like bread and oats actually had a much healthier breakfast, how ironic!

It's been a while since I'd seen this channel. You've really developed as a filmmaker, the images look incredible. The perfectly exposed natural lighting and the rich but realistic color is fantastic. Also, the way you've subtly animated the historical still images is one of the best takes on that concept I've seen. Well done guys.

As someone from the UK. The thing that separates gruel from porridge is that gruel is thinner but it's also savoury. The fat or "drippings" from the last night's meal is added to the pot. Many of us in the north still enjoy lardy toast. Which is re-heating all of complex animal and vegetable remnants from a Sunday roast at the bottom of yesterday's roasting tin and dropping in bread that's gone hard over the weekend. It sounds gross but trust me... it's amazing!

That's no porridge. Cold water , salt , oats , stir to the boil , turn down heat and simmer for eight minutes stirring constantly with a spurtle. My wee Granny would tan your arse if you seved her that. Its one lf our national dishes , our soul food. We have skirlie -fried oats and onions , beremeal bannocks , cranachan . We put oats in haggis and white pudding 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I was born in the 80s and during my childhood the diet was quite monotonous. We lived in the village for some time. In the morning and afternoon they drank tea with bread, sour cream and honey; for dinner there was lamb soup with potatoes, or fried potatoes. And so almost every day. Only on holidays did we eat fruits and sweets. Grandfather was a beekeeper and worked in the forest all day; he took with him bread, hard-boiled eggs and potatoes, which he cooked in the ash.
