How To Use Roto Brush 3.0 in After Effects

What is your opinion of the two-app workflow of Premiere + AfterEffects? You say in the beginning that it is important to commit to the edit at first. But yet it is so hard to commit to the edit without having seen the VFX. The entire back-and-forth between PP and AE seems like such a tedious hassle when you need to change edits. How are coping with it?

Man I'm struggling here.. I don't get the green cursor after double clicking the footage.. I have selected the roto tool.. but I don't get to "paint" the green lines..

I feel like I'm missing a step.
Once I've rotobrush the first frame, I press play, the brush/mask doesn't follow on the subsequent frames. What am I missing here?
