It is widely and affectionately known that Debian is, in fact, for lesbians ❤

It would be helpful if you had tried it because Debian 12 has just been a complete disaster for me, 11 was great and I really wish I had kept it; moving on I tried the network install of Debian 12.9 and it failed to put on any packages, I had no choice but to continue without the packages. It then put grub on the wrong disk, would have been nice if it had asked first, but who wants to boot to windows?

I use Ubuntu (and also have a raspberry pi) and I love Debian based distros. I might honestly go straight to Debian eventually at this point... ubuntu's getting to the point where it's becoming a bit... meh

YES YES AND YES! I use it on 95% of the hosts I herd for my job. Sure, my minetest/luanti server runs on a more... "fun" machine with Arch on it, and I love it for that (and OMG does Arch also have a great community and docs!). But I want no surprises at work, and neither do my users. My question is, I can afford this because I work for a University. But people working for corporate will often have different needs because managers want to "disrupt" :( and so on... then what's a good distro for that? Beside Ubuntu server, which is a great OS except for their Snap policy which gives me nervous rashes

But let's be honest - once you install a program, apt will ask you to delete something, you will agree and apt will take down KDE for you.

Haha, i was unable to bring my Wi-Fi to life on Debian (4?), that's why i started to use Ubuntu (6.10) instead xD
I still don't like Debian, if i have to suck i rather do it with FreeBSD :D
Regardless, I really appreciate the work of "the Debian guys", without them my "daily" OS (Linux Mint) wouldn't exist either.

I tested Siduction ~time of this video. I found it less stable than Arch. Ya, you wanna get work done and live life? Bookworm and LMDE 6 are actually super nice now. I've done a complete turnaround in light of buyouts and IPOs, stability questions. The bottom line is Debian has good funding. That means people care about the mission. All I can do is upsale its ease of use.

I started on Debian, switched to other Distros (like most Linux users who'd like to try out other Distros), went back to Debian, and it has since been my preferred Distro (customized to a lightweight footprint). For my purpose, there is no great need to run `sid`; and Debian `stable` is really solid.

Ever since the first Ubuntu 4.04 release I have used that and gotten a lot out of it, but I never forgot Debian. These days, the majority of packages aren't THAT far behind on Debian, and, even if you do want the newest, Flatpak makes that a pretty painless affair.

The one thing that's always bothered me about Debian that kept me from using it as a daily driver was the kernel, which was often much older than what Ubuntu's LTS release offered. I'm fine if the software I use isn't bleeding edge, but I just like having the core of the OS being current. I use GIMP and Darktable to do my photography and Libreoffice/Evolution for those everyday things. I go download Edge (I'm weird like that).

I have made a discovery though - and most likely, everybody already knew about this. I'm always the last to discover these things. All you need to do is add the "backport" repositories in debian, then do "sudo apt install -t bookworm-backports linux-image-amd64 linux-headers-amd64" and you get meta packages installed along with a very new kernel. As of yesterday "6.11.5+bpo-amd64." And, it's flagged in such a way that if they drop a newer kernel in the backports repository, it will still update during the normal update process.

Now I can have the cake and eat it too - Ubuntu 24.04 is still offering the 6.8 kernels. It's like having the "hardware enablement stack" for Debian.

Debian was the first distro that I really had success with in the 90's in the sense that I could install it in a reasonable amount of time, have it working, and use it as a daily driver. The first for me was Debian 2 "Hamm."

Depending on how you calculate the anniversary, 2024 is still the 30th anniversary. If you count it starting at the first "public beta" in 1994 that is!

Cheers Veronica and cheers to the Linux audience at large!

Debian is Serenity of "Firefly." Arch is the Delta Flyer of "Star Trek: Voyager." The two best distros to use. For daily use, Arch. For a little-used computer that you want to be there when you need it but may need to catch up on system updates first, that computer needs to run on Debian Stable.

If you need to support the very latest AMD or Intel GPU on a new home build, Debian won't do that. You need a rolling release to do that . The next Stable version of Debian will support it, but by then it won't be new anymore.

Testing an Sid are both less stable than Arch.

You can simply install your custom version with make install. Your app will be installed alongside apt meaning you can choose which version you want to run. And when you no longer need your custom version you can use make remove. This is an ideal strategy if you need a later version of QEMU for example which I needed because the qemu version that came with debian 12 did not have zstd support. This way you also don't risk corrupting the resources. For firefox for example I did it a little differently. You can simply change the sources to point to firefox latest releases. I had to do that because chatgpt stopped working with the standard ESR release channel. I'm not an expert but I've come to know various other good ways to deal with versions, most use some type of isolation.

I am a long term Debian user (not sure, I forgot, I'm old :-) maybe for 20-25 years?). For my personal needs "stable" usually had too old package versions, but testing was perfect all the time. I found that distros with more current package versions actually use "testing" as a base. I also have unstable and experimental repos and also some ubuntu. But I pin them lower, so they are only used when necessary. I also add pinning in some cases where I want more current software. E.g. just some moments ago, I added patterns for kde packages to pin them to experimental to get kde6.
No other distribution has such possibilities to manage a complex version dependency.

Btw. I am always ready to try new things, e.g. arch when it appeared and also later when it was more mature, or bedrock linux or immutable distributions.
But I always returned to Debian.
It simply has the best development strategy, and it's not influenced by commercial interests (e.g. like ubuntu).
So everything is aiming at the best way, instead of the most profitable way (which often produces 80/20 decisions, so NOT the best way, but the cheapest, or aiming at the masses).
