Corpus-based data have revolutionized linguistic research during the last 20-30 years, by providing a strong empirical basis for language variation and change. This is especially true now that researchers can quickly and easily extract data from very large (multi-billion word) online corpora. In this presentation, I will show how data from corpora like www.english-corpora.org and www.corpusdelespanol.org can be used to look at historical, dialectal, and genre-based variation, for a wide range of lexical, morphological, syntactic, and semantic phenomena.⠀

Mark Davies is Professor of Linguistics at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, USA. He is the author of more than eighty publications (including five books) dealing with the creation and use of corpora, as well as variationist approaches to English, Portuguese, and Spanish. He has also received six large federal grants (four NEH and two NSF) to create large corpora of these three languages. These corpora are available from www.corpusdoportugues.org, www.english-corpora.org, and www.corpusdelespanol.org, where they are used by more than 130,000 distinct users each month.
