62 years ago I met a girl there on top of her mountain. Spoke at length with her 83 year old grandmother of hard times and her life, the grandmother's life, as a one room school teacher up in Little Canada, NC. Courted the girl. Married her. Laid her to her rest 60 years later up on Water Rock Knob. She could walk the straight and narrow with nary a misstep. Beautiful. Mothered two daughters who have her values. Bounced her grandchildren on her knee. Saw them graduate from college. The visuals are things we saw constantly; that is where we courted. The photography is evocative and it reminds me of her and the day I first saw her. It was like we both knew what was coming from the moment we first saw each other. I was the out-lander and she the mountain girl. When she claimed me as her own she was serious. What to do with a girl who knows how life should work.

I know it was a fairy tale, but that first glance sealed our fates.
