Water Scorpions (Ranatra species) use their powerful beak to penetrate prey and then suck the contents out. This Water Scorpion nymph first catches a Predaceous Diving Beetle larva and then an adult Creeping Water Bug that is not fully grown. Watch it catch prey in slow motion. Also includes clips that have been sped up. Filmed with a digital microscope. From a farm pond in the Missouri Ozarks, USA.
True Bugs, Cicadas, Hoppers, Aphids and Allies (Hemiptera) » True Bugs (Heteroptera) » Aquatic Bugs (Nepomorpha) » Nepoidea » Waterscorpions (Nepidae) » Ranatra (probably fusca)
