A Timeline of the 1980s Heavyweight Boxing Division (Boxing Documentary)

If you haven't seen the accompanying docuseries piece "THE LOST GENERATION OF HEAVYWEIGHT BOXING", which details the finer details of the era and how grand this roster could've been, check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oueb3Jwdhkc&t=6160s

Everybody knows (or is) the "middle child". That first heir to the throne was all that and a pot of grits. The baby child gets all the soft love and what not. The one in the middle however...they get all the pain. Such was the case with the 1980s heavyweight division. The 1970s had produced the greatest decade ever for the division, headlined by the rock/paper/scissors of their era: Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, and George Foreman. These 3 legends were joined by a noticeable roster, the likes of Ken Norton, Larry Holmes, Ron Lyle, Jerry Quarry, Oscar Bonavena, and more. If anything, it was silly to attempt to live up to them...but the lower weight classes of the 1980s (the Fab 5) did a darn good job. The heavyweights, meanwhile, were smack-dab in the middle of The Lost Generation. Larry Holmes had emerged as the lone 70s warrior and had his grip firmly on the division, despite the title being spintered. What would unfold in the 1980s was wildfire, seeing titles bounce around, 2 new sanctioning bodies come to be, major upsets, and much more. The heavyweight roster was even deeper than the 70s, but would they live up to their potential? Well, they're called the Lost Generation for a reason...right!? Decide for yourself, here's the long awaited timeline of the 1980s heavyweights.

Includes (but isn't limited to) such legendary fights as:
THE LAST HURRAH - Larry Holmes vs Muhammad Ali
THE PRIDE & THE GLORY - Larry Holmes vs Gerry Cooney
THE CROWN AFFAIR - Michael Dokes vs Mike Weaver 2/Larry Holmes vs Tim Witherspoon
A SEPTEMBER TO REMEMBER - Larry Holmes vs Michael Spinks 1
JUDGMENT DAY - Mike Tyson vs Trevor Berbick
THE ULTIMATE - Mike Tyson vs Tony Tucker
HEAVYWEIGHT HISTORY - Mike Tyson vs Larry Holmes
ONCE AND FOR ALL - Mike Tyson vs Michael Spinks
A DATE WITH DESTINY - Evander Holyfield vs Michael Dokes

Man I was born in 2000 and I am a big fan of heavyweight division but never had a chance to see guys like Muhamed ali, Frazier, Larry Holmes, Mike Tyson in action. Your documentaries really helped me to learn a lot about history of this division and some fighters I knew not much about. Huge respect for the hard work bro!
Btw if you could make some shorter timeline of best boxers before 1970’s that would be cool

I love this video, and this channel in general. I’ve always been interested in boxing, and the history of boxing. You did a great job summarizing it, the 80’s is a era i didn’t really knew about other then the basics about Larry Holmes being a dominant champion and the rise of Tyson. I really thank you with this video! I haven’t finished the video yet but it’s well put together, I have one question. What’s your top 5 boxers of the 80’s?

Your choices of "Upset of the Year" are the splash of humor in this great series. If Spinks had beat Tyson, THAT would have been an enormous upset. Tyson was a 4-1 favorite, and most people thought he would knock Spinks out.

Ответить
@johnjamele
@johnjamele - 22.10.2023 21:21

Tyson didn't become the youngest heavyweight champion of all time, just the youngest to win the belt. He wasn't champion until he beat Spinks, the man who beat the man who beat the man. And I couldn't care less if Don King gave Tyson a crown and a scepter and Ali was there to congratulate Tyson after he beat Tucker- all he did was unify belts; he didn't win the title. Not until he beat Spinks.

Thank you for a great trip down memory lane as the 1980s was my decade of getting into boxing as a teenager. I remember seeing most of these fights here in the UK on free TV. So many great fights and so many champions. My first super fight that I watched on TV was the Holmes v Cooney fight and I was hooked from then. My man was Larry Holmes. Great video and very classy how you've put it together. Keep the good work going.

You should have a black man that knows boxing history narrate. He should be able to correctly pronounce all the names. What does Rocky & Jake LaMotta have to do with 1980 heavy-weights? One more thing. I'm a die-hard Larry Holmes fan. Other than your narrattor l've never heard anybody call him " the big black cloud".

Thank you for this great documentary. And especially for giving Holmes his due. And clarifying the "avenge of Ali" by Tyson. It wasn't against Holmes, it was against Berbick. Larry actually made Ali a favor and gave him his last big payday, which Ali desperately needed. Heck, if not for that glove caught in the ropes, well, we'll never know, I don't think that Larry could defeat Tyson, but going the distance? Perhaps. Larry's recuperative powers were insane, if you didn't finish him in the very same round you hurt him, in the next you'll have to start all over again. What a champion he was, and what a man he is. Always honest, always class act. Hat's off Larry.
