You should watch shallow grave or Slumdog millionaire. If only for you're reaction to the poo.

The point about the title is to compare the mundanity of the drug lifestyle to a hobby which is reputedly notoriously boring. As for the lifestyle itself, and the mental effects of their addiction, I remember reading an interview with a former professional footballer (Paul Merson) and he talked candidly about his own addiction - in his case to gambling - and as part of that he made a really interesting point. He said that for the addict losing was often 'better' because it gave him an excuse, something external to blame for his problems rather that looking inwards and focusing on why he had become an addict. It's somewhat tangental but I think something similar holds true for Renton and his associates: they never seem to actually hold themselves up to the light and pinpoint why they are addicts - yes, the drugs are addictive, of course, but there is something deeper going on within them and it's never analysed, with all of them instead seeming to accept that they are fuck-ups because of the drugs, and not because of themselves.

The author actually saysvthe story takes place roughly between 1983 & 1987....i thought it was a mid 90’s story for years...83 seems a little early for aids awareness on this level, but 85 to 87 sounds about right.

Train spotting is indeed a hobby- Apparently, it's also a junkie euphemism for doing drugs.

When Renton pops the dog in the park, the important thing to notice it whose dog it is: The guy is a skinhead- In addition to being hooligans, skinheads are militantly straight edge, and thus the natural enemies of junkies like Renton and Sick Boy- so getting him mauled by his own dog is something they might see as being a good citizen.

In the book Renton and Begbie are in the old derelict train station in Leith at night. They meet an old alcoholic hobo in the derelict station, What ya doing here boys, trainspotting? The alcoholic is Begbies father. The guy who sells Renton the opium suppositories is played by Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh.

For a full 180 on Robert Carlyle, who played Begbie, watch "The Full Monty", which is about a group of unemployed middle-aged men from the north of England, who decide to strip to make money.

The novel is AMAZING as well. Danny Boyle was in peak form here. My favorite film of that year. This flick catapulted Ewan McGregor into stardom.

Im Scottish and my wife is from Texas. She had never seen the movie before and i knew she was gonna struggle with the baby scene. She was in tears.... so upsetting. I was 12 when this movie came out and i grew up around a lot of Heroin users in my area. This movie shed light on how brutal this life is not just for users but there familes and there children. This movie saved a lot of kids from hard drugs due to not glamorizing it and showing the harsh reality.

I can only assume you are alot younger than I am. For another of Ervine Walsh's adaptations to screen is a film called The Acid House. It's ace and Well worth watching . Cheers.

As an ex-addict, the strongest line for me is: “But he’s a mate, so what can you do?”

That mentality is so intrinsic; borderline sacred. And it’s also the thing that keeps people going back, more often than not. It took absolutely everything to break that sentiment. Because when you are shit, genuine shit, the shit people around you are the only ones who you feel will accept you.
