Yo, I appreciate a lot of the points you made in this video. I just wanted to point out, though, that the peak concurrent player count you looked up for ESO on Steam is not the same thing as the active player count. The first number tells you how many players are all playing online at the same time. The second number tells you how many people played the game over some longer period of time, like maybe daily. So, you legit can't compare the two numbers like you did in your video. FWIW, if there are 20K peak concurrent players on Steam alone, not counting the dedicated launcher or consoles, then yeah I can believe there could be 200K daily active players, and that number could even be in the millions if you were to consider maybe monthly active players instead of daily

casual players or new players aren't even gonna know the concept of an 'endgame' and most likely won't even make it too 100 hours, They might complete as much story or other activities as they can and then stop playing, They aren't gonna play for that long at a time and grind out endgame dungeons

bro are you fucking kidding me eso is huge, every zone is always packed with players even the PVP only cyrodiil/imperial city. new DLC releases and the older zones still contains players. so eso is easily one of the biggies

I think it just comes down to tier lists are also opinion. I also personally don't think it takes 100 hours to assess if a game is any good. If it takes over 100 hours for a game to get fun and enjoyable it probably won't do super well. And the real reality is most people are not hardcore players. Even in super successful mmo's like FF14 and WoW less then 10% of the playerbase actually does top tier content like raiding and ranked/hardcore pvp. Most players spam casual matches, rp, do dailies, etc. And if you are a hardcore mmo player a tierlist is super meaningless to that type of player. Its because we know what we want, we can google or look up specific stuff about the game. Like for example when i went into ff14 from swtor, wow, and bdo i didn't look up asmond video. I saw a xeno vid, someone who does hardcore raiding in the game. And then as a pvper i looked up what the pvpers thought of the game. But the reality is most players are casual players and aren't gonna put 100+ hours into it. Even as a 20+ year veteran of the genre i dont need 100 hours in to tell if a game is any good. But maybe taking a break from the genre might be good. Burn out is a real thing and sometimes we don't realize we are burnt out. As for sandbox mmo's tholl I feel you there, I personally don't enjoy MO2 because of the combat, how devs have handled that game, and its system design but I do miss games like SWG and such. But WoW stomped that game out as well. Over time i have just accepted that people really like the theme park setup and to a degree i do to. I think its just best to find the MMO that connects with you, enjoy the community around that game and have fun. It doesn't matter where a content creator puts the game on a tier list as long as you and the boys are having fun that is all that matters.

I'll say that your mindset regarding it is wrong. It doesn't matter if a game is losing players over time, that doesn't mean a game is bad quality. If it were, WoW would be considered bad even though it's likely still the most popular subscription mmo. Every lull period before an expansion comes out, game magically turns bad. Additionally, a loss of players over time would then be a metric for single player games like elden ring and final fantasy. Final Fantasy 7 would be trash if active player count is low.

What I'm trying to convey is even though it's an mmo, that doesn't mean people need to be active 24/7. It's a video game, people come and go as their interest grows and falls. Normal people play MMO's the same way they play video games. They play it while the game interests them and then they move on when they're done playing.

It's perfectly fine to not like a game but my gosh, in the friendliest way, you've said at least a dozen times "hot take" and "others dont agree" and you can't even give a valid reason for hating the game. Being unable to immerse yourself in the world was a fantastic start and if it ended there, that would have been a good reason but you had to ruin it by saying /becuse/ of the waifu character which is just a laughably bad excuse.

It's all so subjective right? For me GW2 and ESO are the best MMO's FOR ME, because I can dip in and out, there's always easy to get to interesting content and understandable systems that I don't need hours to refresh my brain on to have fun. I'm an mmo tourist, I have the most time in FFXIV, GW2, ESO and WOW. But I've definitely played the top 15(?) western/popular in the west mmo's and the two that consistently keep me coming back when I drift away are GW2 and ESO. It's all down to subjective value. End game raiders probably value WOW, GW2 and FFXIV, grinders Runescape, BDO and New World. As a hop in and hop out it's world immerision - ESO feels like home because I've been playing them forever, system approachability, and minute to minute game play/fun factor.

I know I'm leaving this 3 months after the fact but you got me thinking and that got me writing :) Keep up the goodness.

Thank you for the candid opinion on this, I prefer single game play reviews with both pros and cons to lists. Lists just seem like busy filler content, sometimes paid maybe if it is review us good and we will give you free stuff/content.

I don't agree that every MMO needs over 100 hours to assess. I hated FF XIV in the first 20 hours, but I held out. I'm now at 153 hours and csnt say my minds changed. You also don't need more than in hour in some games like Flyff or Tree of Saviour etc. Lots of variables tbf

Ff14 is a tough one, going through the first bit if the game is always an absolute crawl, arr being the mist dreadful in every way except for some alright story in parts of it. The content after has better story and content but you dont start seeing the really juicy bits of the game till stormblood and after where the classes get really fun to play and content opens up a bit more. Stormbloods msq isn't too great but everything else in that part is nice and it makes the progress worth it, though it's understandable getting turned away cause it'll feel so far.

Genshin Impact ain't an MMO despite being the most popular, tho.

FWIW in the case of ffxiv the story itself doesn't go into that smut territory at all. If you play like I do and don't socialize in the major hub areas like limsa the erp slut catgirls aren't too hard to avoid so you can better immerse yourself in the world as the devs intended. The dynamic is essentially "world and characters are more typical fantasy, avoid major city social centers to dodge the egirls and coomers"

ESO is one I always revisit, recently started my Neverwinter journey. It’s alright, I’m hoping to try out FF14 soon.

as much as you may hate to hear, there is no
need to have a content creator popularity to make a game good. infact in many ways having a lot of content about a game henders its fun.

Honestly ESO has some good qualities just like many other mmos have but the team in charge of ESO is more invested into how to make the next big buck instead of fixing issues that have been pointed out very clearly from the fan base. I lost trust in them when they promoted the oakensoul ring just to nerf it next patch which was the selling point of the high isle expansion, many of us just purchased high for that mythic just for it to be irrelevant later.

If I'm bored before the end game. Fuck this MMORPG.

I downloaded ESO, got dumped somewhere that seemed like the middle or end of the game and not a starter zone. It looked drab and boring AF. Played boring too so I quit after probably not even 10 hours. I played WoW in "my younger days" way too much doing endgame raiding type stuff, but these days I prefer the more casual, single player story experience alongside friends type MMO and GW2 is scratching that itch of a beautiful game with a story to experience with other people around.
