How to Grow Lettuce // Seed to Harvest // Complete Growing Guide

It's great to see people growing their own food, and much healthier for both the body and the mind.

Some ppl here in my country grow lettuces to its full length by taking out only old leaves occasionally but staying the stem of lettuce not harmed. That's because they believe the stem of lettuce is a medicine for insomnia. When it is let to be fully grown up, its height reaches more than 1meter and it develops its stem to be thicker, stronger. Then they harvest the stem, let it dry and put it into a boiling water to drink it as a medicine. Of course if we try to develop more feasible medicines from nature, the stem might not be the best answer, but anyway ppl are growing lettuces both for taking seeds for next season and for medicine as well.

Sooooo new at the garden thing. Can I grow veges other than tomatoes in tomato potting mix in a container. What conditions, potting mix and weather wise do I need to grow salanova lettuce, do they need direct sunlight.

I love your channel altho I won't recommend to others if you continue to advertize products other than gardening ones.

I have gotten great yield over a long season with Burpee’s 4 season, Muir, magenta, and Nevada lettuce varieties. They are not killed by the light frosts I get. During the summer, I grow them next to the north and east sides of my house, and under larger plants such as peppers, eggplant, and tomatoes.

Ugh. I tried growing direct-sow lettuce in the fall. Zone 8b. It only grew 1/4" in 60 days. Will try again as transplants.

What’s the best lettuce to start with?

For CONTAINER lettuce, what should I do when the plants I started as seeds in the container are leggy and end up laying on the soil and not growing?

I’m getting ready to plant igloo lettuce. It grows in a head and is not susceptible to extreme heat. Howver, I am planting it in a tiered grower, and the potting soil is old. What should I apply to the potting soil whennI plant it?

My fav is mesclun and romaine.

You can get a lot of seeds in the summer time, with bolting lettuce plants.

How often should you water lettuce? I used to water them everyday and soak them and it seemed like it would kill the outter part of the lettuce and turned brown there was no signs of bugs or worms idk if its because Im over watering them.

This might be a very silly question but on the subject of aphids can you plant one or two scallion or dill plants in a large tomato container to protect the tomato plant or will i be eating tomatoes that taste like onions LOL

Thanks for the liquid fertilizing tip. I like to use vegan fertilizers so I use liquid kelp, as well as some azomite added to the water. Also, the companion planting tips to reduce pests are very helpful.

Thank you for all those tips on how to keep the insects off your plants with companion planting. The garden insects were relenting last summer here in NC. I did find that Marigolds helped the tomatoes. TY!

How do we keep slugs away

I tried growing gem lettuce this past fall an only one produced leaves, which I harvested the leaves twice. I want to try again.

I'm in zone 8a and I have Parris Island Romaine growing outside now. I have had success growing Tom Thumb bib lettuce and regular loose-leaf as well all year 'round.

My favorite lettuce is PRIZEHEAD. It's a loose red lettuce so sweet and tender. Thanks for the sand shaker tip!

I grow several varieties of lettuce. In my garden, the leaf lettuces appear to have no pests. But the Boston head lettuces get infested by slugs. I gave up on Romaine lettuce a few years ago. Do you know if there are any companion plants that deter slugs? I have tried the beer traps before and found plenty of drowned slugs. But that didn't make much difference in the degree of slug infestation in my head lettuce.

I planted lettuce a couple years ago and haven’t had to re seed since. It’s everywhere.

I have never had success direct sowing lettuces. Tried many species. They either don’t sprout or sprout and the seedlings get attacked by animals and bugs. Brassicas for some reason manage to survive.

Getting ready to build a 8 x12 greenhouse. With recycled windows double pane. And a refurbished exhaust fan. I don't know the CFM of the fan. 1500 rpm. How much air that puts out. Does anyone have a reget on building a green house that maybe you could share with me? Before I make the final plans in stone?

Yay! Thanks for this video, I've just started some lettuce that I hope will feel good being transplanted in the greenhouse in late February/early March. If we don't get too hard freezes, it should be fine.

I tend to grow head lettuce like cos and romaine but I might try the leaf lettuce this year. Thanks for all the advice

During our winter here in Tehachapi, 8b, have been Romain growing lettuce in an aerogarden. There is snow outside and lettuce growing inside! Have had great luck with cherry tomatoes in the aerogarden. Had 2 plants going non stop for almost 2 years with pruning. My youngest grand daughter eats them off the vine.

My lettuce gets leggy and falls over. I use grow lights close to the plant. I also use Kellogg potting soil. What am I doing wrong.?
