There are a lot of reasons the cost the movie format some movies come out just on dvd not blue Ray and or 4K and vises versus 🆚 I strictly stay with dvd 📀 cause it’s cheaper and I don’t to this day have a blue Ray player I’m getting one by the end of this year the cheapest I’ve seen is $300.00 and also I don’t really want to buy all my movies all over again to this to that no I’ll stick to dvds

4 k disc are not as reliable and I personally am getting tired of returning them. Blu ray discs do not have this problem. Not saying all 4 k discs are defective but I have recently returned 4 titles .The replacements played without issue .

The only 4k movies I have after the avatar films. While I really like those movies they are probably among the few movies that should be viewed in 4k. Everything else I have is 1080p, and I’m happy with that.

I need to know that, 1) the Film/production merits it, when most do NOT. 2) The film production team shoots and keeps a UHD offering in mind so transfer makes sense. Well that's it.... I don't actually need Top Guns in Ultra (my taste), but I would love "Love Death & Robots" if done right in UHD... or perhaps the last Star Wars trilogy:
if it was actually any good.
Standard Blu-ray is fine for most things... I currently have 6 titles in UHD, and most are Chris Nolan (I'd do Anderson and Waititi though, if I loved something enough for multiple rewatching). I don't even need UHD for Tarantino or Scorsese, or any of the directors that live in 24FPS celluloid film love, or anything made before 2010. 1080 Blu Ray is fine for that.
"More" would mean, I'm just having a device make up what was never recorded in the first place. I need the studios to make honest transfers. Audiophiles sometimes do this a lot, when the vinyl came from a session recorded with +4, 30ips, NS-10s and farfield Urei monitors (all of your zillion dollar gear won't help you extract anything more than noise from poorly transferred mediums). Relax you guys. Enjoy the work. The Beatles were not recorded on 96+ distinct HD tracks... no. And film and sound were not always "great".
That said, I want the Series "Succession" in full UHD, Dolby Atmos 11.1 ( because a point 2 is a waste in most spaces, aside from maybe a 3db SPL gain). My 2 cents.

People still buy dvds because they dont see the difference or dont care. Now you are taking another step and asking people to buy a format that is only noticeable on a really nice, big tv? Of course people arent going for that. You have to accept that there is a poiny of diminishing returns for how good a movie can look vs the price of getting that experience. For 99% of people the difference between blu ray and 4k is marginal at best. And unless it becomes affordable it will be a niche blip in the history of home video formats, like HD VHS.

I old hundreds of Blu-ray and blu-ray 4K for one simple reason : lifetime! Blu-ray discs have a lifetime of around 10 years, which means you support the industry, you spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on Blu-rays... and in a few years from now, you'll end ep with just BR case and unusable discs. Actually it already happens to me with some BR (early adopter) that can't be read anymore (0 scratchs, 0 finger prints) and I had countless of DVD who didn't work anymore after 10 years. So studios can cry because of piracy, but with piracy my films, series, anime (that i remuxed from my own collection before I sold the BR) I could still watch them in 50 years from now (yeah HDD can die too, and htey will, but HDD are cheap now and I have backups).
Not evne mentioning that I bought hundreds of DVD > bim here comes the blu-ray, and I can't pass on it, it's HD, so I bought them all again, then bim > here comes 4K and HDR, so yeah, as a movies/series/anime buff, it's hard to pass on an even better experience (will never go 8K though)

The truth is, 4K TVs that most people buy aren’t capable of showcasing the benefits of UHD Blus. If you own a $500 65” 4K TV it’s not going to be able to properly display HDR. The bump in resolution (especially on most transfers pulled from 2K intermediates) won’t be enough to get people to spend extra for the UHD.

It didn’t matter what type of TV you had when DVD came out, you can easily see the improvement over VHS. It didn’t matter what HDTV you had, you could see the difference in quality between DVD and BluRay (assuming your TV was big enough to notice. Probably not too noticeable on a 32”). It’s just not the case with UHD. You need an OLED or a flagship LCD with a solid dimming feature.

Joe - 17.09.2023 06:23

Cost of entry + Cost per disk + needing a higher end TV to notice a real difference between 1080p Blu and UHd Blu

If you have an edge lit LCD it’s nowhere near capable of handling HDR. Even low to midrange backlit LCDs aren’t capable of the contrast needed for HDR.

I think poor transfer is an issue, and pricing could be better. I have had an interest right from Dolby prologic, and video tapes. They all had to be abandoned when dvd came out. Films were £20 VHS, then the same when dvd came out. Plus a £400 dvd player, and Dolby digital surround system £200. I have hundreds of dvds and shudder to think what I paid, when now they are available in exchange shops for £2. I have a hundred or so blurays, which were nearly all from exchange shops. I use a Samsung au 8000 50" TV Panasonic btp180 upscaling Blu-ray player and a Samsung q600b soundbar with rear speakers. I think the picture and sound from this budget setup is enough for me now, and I don't feel the picture will be much better for fast moving movies. I am dubious about the quality and effort put in for Atmos, and this is why I don't have this interest in my set up. Many reviewers have felt let down over the Atmos effect in some films. Add streaming into this equation and less younger people feel the need to own the physical copy of a film, when they are paying for multiple streams and internet. I am 55 years old, and feel physical discs have not got much time left. I thought usb would have taken over, but the worry of the memory corrupting would put me off them.

I couldn't believe i watched this and nothing was said about streaming? like not even 5% of the big guys video, what happened? If video killed the radio star, then streaming killed physical media.. when Blockbuster folded & Netflix became the new No1 playa. The days of Friday nights cant wait to go to blockbuster video store for latest release or at weekends roaming through the strip mall stores for DVD's are a thing of the past. Then when the name we cannot say came along ..that was the cherry on the icing. The TV remote was king of the jungle and the latest and greatest was at your finger tips, just a press of a button away.

Other than the die hard buffs & enthusiast's the younger gen just dont care, streaming is where its at end of story. And corporate dont care either, they are just looking for the quick buck like everyone else, they stopped supporting the chain of manufacturers, cutting out the middle man so to say. Like what Sony & Microsoft have done with consoles, why make DVD/Blurays booklets aka physical media that caught your eye n got you excited when they can just publish online for the same price ..SAME PRICE?

look at the cost of games online & physical media there's really no difference, gone are the days when people bought latest GTA for the printed physical map or steel edition for that extra eye extravaganza whatever, if that option is taken away then there's no choice for the consumer??? that lemming culture :(

When high end manufacturers saw the writing on the wall & started to pull out like OPPO even they knew that streaming was the way things were going, they didn't even put streaming or apps into their last high end model, like giving the middle finger to corporate giants 'we aint gonna buy ALL the licenses, we read the small print'' we will build with parts we paid for then when they run out so are we.

The only players on the market now are from the same manufacturers of the TV's/Panels and to be honest the likes of independent's like LG who dont really have a part in making the movies or media like Sony etc would happily add apps to there latest models.. FOR A FEE! yeah they dont do android market place they found their niche to sell their panels and its streaming all the way baby and you no pay then you no play on their equipment were also in no rush to bring out players.

Lastly 4K media is way better visually than 1080p and if your Mr Magoo & cant see that, then that's ok for you, just stick to 1080p/DVD each to there own, but you are missing out. Now 4k is where corporate went and truly F&*%ed up lets be honest when the name we cannot say came alone was the pivotal point that physical media could have been given the boost it truly needed that point where people did make the jump from HD to UHD with buying new TV's & players. But what did they do.. its was the mad dash with every movie studio scrambling like a crusade to the nearest streaming platform for a deal to pay off the creditors, lawyers & investors and the really big budget movies being delayed till theater's reopened. As the neysayers and uneducated will say 'but we already got 4K we can get 4K online duh..' well your right it is 4K in name only, its like a cut down version of what 4K really is supposed to be, like a 1440p bitrate slashed encoded shadow of its former 4k drug addict self edition, honestly some streamers should be ashamed to say 4K content.

Like where online streamers are dragging the x264 codec like a dead horse when x265 is the person in the crowd waving its hands and shouting & trying to be seen night and day other bestest option foe encoding & streaming bandwidth. And the irony is when the corporate powers that be eventually get round to using x265.. xXXX will have been in the computer community for years awaiting to be adopted like puss n boots with the big eyes, but by then it will just be a USB box or dongle you'll plugin to your TV/Panel for the latest and greatest libraries, binge watching hours of trash or that movie/series media jumping from bed to bed after being with THAT streamer exclusively for x amount of months for that direct deposit one low monthly payment of XX.99, except amazon it has the balls to take the full year cos its INCLUDED with Prime, On a side note when content gets half descent i wonder when that will break away for one low monthly payment, lol

But by now the world as we know it changed people got used to the NEW WAY of getting that binge watching entire season and latest movies, and if movie theater's dont make a positive change be it reducing prices or thinking of new ways to get people inside theater's, they too are going to go by the way of the dinosaurs. Not by the way of people not going but by the number of people going, they wont survive on that tiny % its never ever, ever going to go back to the way it used to be, THEY will tell you different but just watch and see which one files for chapter 11 first will be the way to go wait n see. Rant over lets just wait n see what happens next, dont say i didn't tell ya first ;) and P.S. i dont think i ever will sell my Oppo 203 the 1st and probably the best REAL 4k player that hit the market with what it says on the tin when it was released :D

As for 8K.. Dont even get me started, that will be some bastardised 8K??? codec to try stream :O physical media to play and to be honest hard sell to consumers... if 4k cant be done right..?

Its like asking the Q what ever happened to VR (=)+(=) it was the way of the future, Microsoft pulled out cos they late in the game for patients and showing not even buying others made them want to continue, Sony chugged along being the only contender in the market of eh one? & Apple being Apple put a whatcha smoking high price on it n slipped into the shadows with a 'where are they now' no where to be seen presence since Jobs left the stage & Google ..Aaah Google like the silent ninja wait n see you'll be like your really there, face to face with Brad Pitt in mid air fighting Tom Cruise for his parachute.. right in the middle on center stage right next to Bea dancing away.. with your digitally scanned real life avatar posting LIVE online and the mouse whispering in your ear "where dreams do come true" ...All for one low monthly payment of time you will never get back and ...---... is the new retro :D ;D :D

The cheapest 4K player available to most people is surprisingly the Xbox one S which will inevitably drop in price (possibly to below 100) since it is now last gen and less games will release for it. Despite this however, I have heard mixed things about how well it plays 4K discs.

But for now I'm always going to buy 4K, Blu-ray and DVD because streaming is a much lower quality than those formats. I upgraded everything to 4K from my TV to the receiver even the wiring. I have the Marantz SR-6015 receiver and that Panasonic DP-UB820 that you showed. And it was 499.98 when I brought it along with a LG TV and the New XBOX -X. I didn't catch a sale on any of my updated equipment. So I want the best content to come out of it. All of that is also 8K ready. P.S the 4K in my Xbox X is not better than my Panasonic 820. You shouldn't use the gaming console for your 4K player. But I will always buy Blu-ray and specially DVDs. I just bought like a hundred of them brand new for 1 dollar a piece at a Goodwill store in my city. Because most of these movies will never be turned over to Blu-ray or 4K. Like you said you'll miss out on a lot of content if you just strictly buy 4K.👍🏽✌🏽

For me it wasn't the cost of the equipment it's just that 4K discs is overpriced and it's not that much clearer and sound better than the Blu-ray or a DVD especially if you put those disk in the 4K machine? The only time I really buy 4K discs are for special movies and even then I wait for the price to go down. I have a very good job but I still don't like giving my money away on something that's not really that much better than the other unit. Plus a scene with Atmos is few and far between.

Now with great black level 4k TVs then 3D movies has way more potenciality to do success than earlier, when people only had bleak picture from HD LCD screen with only 480 horisontal lines on each pitures drawn on the screen.

A big reason for avoiding many UHDs (at least for me) is the colour tampering that at least half of all new releases are undergoing, maybe more. Up until the DVD era, most releases were colour timed in natural, attractive hues (whites were white, blues were blue, and pinks and violets were allowed to exist). But ever since digital grading became a thing, suddenly not only were new films being released with a digitally applied greenish-yellow tint, but what's worse, newly "remastered" releases of older films were being slathered with the same urine-yellow or pea-soup-green grade. What good is superior resolution if the colours look ugly, with mucus skies and yellow clouds? In many cases, I find that I have to stick to DVDs, despite their lower resolution, over blu-rays -- or early blu-rays over later blu-rays or UHDs -- just to get a natural colour palette.

I have a Sony KDL-40XBR from 2008 as my only TV. It’s still a great TV with a really sharp picture and great colours, plus some of the best in-built TV speakers I’ve ever heard. if it broke I wouldn’t upgrade to something new, I’d just get a similar model used. Plus I hook it up to a PS3 for games, movies and music. The TV is 1080p and the PS3 can only play regular Blu-ray Discs, so there’s no point in me spending $10-15 AUD extra per movie for no difference. Plus, I borrow most movies from the library and they only carry DVD and BD, I genuinely don’t think I’ve ever seen a UHD Blu-ray once.

for me this is what has screwed everything up. no pre-existing setup that cost a substantial amount built in 2012 should have its dolby true hd newtered to present a movie in 4k on a new oled. we should see 4k oleds having uhd disks thrown at them all the time but we dont see that because the sound is then only in 2 channel. motthballing something like a mint condition Anthem MRX700 is out of the question to any sane owner of the equipment so they do what i did and stick with a 1080p build and maybe run one source direct into the tv for when they want to show off picture quality to a friend.

Personally I don't see the point in buying 2K blu-ray, the entire point, to me, of getting a physical copy is to have the best possible quality, if its a film that I don't care about the quality, then I probably don't care about buying the UHD copy anyway. I already bought the UHD blu ray player years ago and the TV so the cost is just the difference between the blu ray release and UHD blu ray release which is minimal on most releases. so sure, I might not go buy a movie I already owned on regular blu ray, but if I am going out and buying a movie I don't already own and I have the choice, I will pick the UHD copy every time.

Afterwards it‘s the visuals… max 20%. The current G3 oled 77“+ tvs are great plus a pioneer udp lx500 is top … nethertheless my equipment is still functional - no issues - perhaps in the future. As a home theatre enthusiast for the last 20 yrs
I totally disagree with you here
Its 100% the cost of the disc
Youre just looking at your local market ie usa
20% drop in uhd sale is global not just usa market
Cost of uhd here in Australia is $60 not $25 like usa

Because of the massive mark up on UHD disc they are only sold in one or two boutique stores
The large retail chains only sell dvds / bd because theyre affordable

Same with the Asian market.
Extremely hard to find a store anywhere in most of Asia that sells UHD disc
Thats because the cost price is marked up so high

The industry has the cost price set too high.
Thats the reason why
Nothing to do with equipment
