I think R is great and totally agree with the ease of using if for visualisations and stats including machine learning. Only thing I general wish it was better at for a sports analyst perspective is Computer/Machine Vision. OpenCV seems soooo much better than anything I've managed to find on R :(

thanks! now i use both: R seems simplier, but Python is more like a classic programming language (i started from C and C++)

can not really understand your critique of R: I can do all those things in R (scraping, ML) with the additional benefit of learning the tidyverse syntax, so I can understand SQL as an add on as well...
