Is Jedi Academy Still Good 20 Years Later?

JKA will forever hold a special place in my heart.

I have many a fond memory of making maps and managing JKFiles. Those were the days!

I always make a female MC because she's voiced by Jennifer Hale (a competent voice actress) while the male MC's voice acting is just atrocious.

I have spent hundreds of hours in Singlpe player of Jedi Academy alone, add on multiplayer and it's been easily above 1k - probably less than 2 k, but yeah

I still replay it every year or so, doing a full playthrough with first-person lightsaber battles or with realistic damage can really switch up how you play the game

This game and its predecessors has all the vibe of the old SW trilogy. For that I will always love all of them. They definitely deserve a full remake. Also, Kyle Katarn deserves to be part of the canon.

The Dark Forces/Jedi Knight saga is among my favorite Star Wars media (although I admittedly haven't played Dark Forces, and only a tiny bit of Jedi Knight a long time ago. Jedi Outcast and Academy I still play to this day though), second to the Old Republic period (Comics, KotOR 1 & 2 and The Old Republic MMO). I also liked the Legacy comics set about 130 years after episode 4. Planning to re-read them after I finish the KotOR comics.

Replaying this rekindled my admiration for what Star Wars use to be. Simply amazing.

The game is good. Aside from certain levels.. but it’s still kinda fun.

jk2 was great. It was my first multiplayer game when I was 10 years old.

Would there be Starwars Jedi Academy 2.0 in a few years time? I would love to play it.

This game was honestly kinda insane for it's time. I remember playing it when I was a kid and it hooked me so hard.

I just finished this and Outcast again. Still fun. Outcast has a much better story and flows better. But Academy was just plain fun to play. The force powers and lightsaber combat were just better. Picking a lightsaber color was nice too. You can do it in Outcast with cheats but thats all. You could use a single saber or dual wield or get a saberstaff. Each had a special move too. The story just felt rushed or they didnt put enough money into it. But all have their strengths. LucasArts was known for great games back in that era.

Too bad Mara Jade isn’t in the game.

The book Riptide shows Jaden Korr’s third Lightsaber being Yellow.

Absolutely loved the game, just played it at the beginning of this year, had this „Star Wars“ feeling again since a long time again.

Each year or two I go through the solo mode once. It's like 15 years for me, but still top of star wars game for me.

the game is great, but the poor customization is a pitty, and the game it's too short, you can finish it in one day

On a gameplay level, I still believe this is the best SW game. The graphics don't even bother me

jk2 outcast and academy had the best lightsaber combat. probably nothing to match them have been done since. however the combat and force use was still a bit fiddly and inaccurate in multiplayer. If they made a jk game with combat mechanics of " hellish quart " game, I would be very interested...oh wait...woke disney owns Sw now, and they also binned the old extended stories. never mind.

Yes. Yes it is. In my mind this game is the true "sequel" story we needed. One of them anyway. The disney trilogy is poo. So i find myself resorting back to classic starwars games an books for my sequel fix. This is still one of, if not the best starwars game ever made.

More then 15 years ago and I still remember absolute peak fun i had with friends in LAN in Jedi Outcast 2. From that mind trick (invisibility) to Vaders famous force choke. Battlefront and all that garbage that came after never even touched that LAN plays I had,

There is no better lightsaber combat system, even jedi fallen order falls behind. The way how individual you can fight, was and is amazing. I imagine a game with the look of fallen order and survivor with the combat abilities of academy, this would be very great.

What about mods for appearance and gameplay improvements? are there any?

I went into the video expecting mods to be covered, since mods can make dated more palatable to play in modern hardware.

Thanks for this video. I can’t help but cringe looking back at our work 20 years later (the ugly models, low-res textures, animation jank), but it’s a product of its time. I’m glad people have fond memories of it, Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy will always hold a special place in my heart as a game developer, and I’m so happy the community has kept these games alive, improved on them and keep playing them. Thanks again for the trip down memory lane!

The worst lightsaber combat ever designed. Two characters sliding on the ground trying to hit each other, no to mention constant jumping resulting in hit and jump combat which doesnt resemble lightsaber combat scenes in movies.

only difference is that Kyle becomes a Jedi in the 2nd one so they can't really call the third one "Jedi Knight III", whereas John Rambo was always John Rambo.

Its had to believe that after all these years this is still the best. Nothing released recently even comes close. I hate the new star wars games they have no soul and combat is awful.
