Not got very green credentials compared to a vehicle that will live 60 years, equalling 3 new Defenders. Plus enormous costs in electronic repairs. No fun if your scared of scratching £60,000 worth of unreliable tech. I will keep my 90 Defender and 73 year old 80" series 1. Much more reliable and much more fun.

Ok, I'll admit I'm biased as I have an old short wheel based Defender. But here's the thing, in this challenge they've used the long wheel based Defender and the turning circle is dismal, if they'd used the short wheel based version I think it would have given the new Defender a real run for it's money. The other thing is, if your old school Landy breaks down, at least you can fix it yourself without having to plug a laptop into it, and most of the time with just basic tools.

The new Defender misses the point of the old one. It's way too expensive to use as a working vehicle, and the longevity will just not be there, given all the complicated electronics used on it. On a final point, the old Defender (in my opinion) just looks so cool and different from everything else on the road. Kids seem to love it and point it out to there parents, all the guys I work with say they'd love to own it, and even though I'm an older guy these days, I can't help but notice the appreciative looks I get from the ladies when I drive by if you know what I mean ;-)

old defender hits a big rock: generally a hammer and a pry bar will fix it. at worst, 150 for a new part anyone could replace in the bush with a simple tool kit
new defender hits a bit rock: yeah you just messed up several 500+ electronics that cant be fixed out in the bush because they require a specialist, and now you are out like 3k

Let’s see which one is still going in 20 years. The new defenders just look like an up dated freelander with air suspension and then Land Rover put a defender badge on it. 90% of them will never be used for off roading or go off road. Plus all the computers on it just means more to go wrong. An you don’t need it to go wrong when your stuck in the middle of nowhere.
The old defender was built to last which is why you still see them on the road today. Basic tool kit, bit of knowledge and you can fix it. Plus the massive Land Rover community all round the world to help you out on issues if any. But the new defender it going to result in a massive bill from land rover or your local garage.

How about getting the new defender, rang rover, a discovery 1 or 2, an old defender and a series Land Rover and old Range Rover. You can pick any new defender and any new range rover. The others can have modification. Take them on some green lanes (hard and easy) or one of the off road pits, instead of a basic off road place. Then let’s see who wins.

There are some people in India who love the new one because a shit Indian brand called Tata bought Land Rover and Indian people love that shit guy Ratan Tata more than their own family.And love all the shit cars they make,ex new defender, Safari etc over some really good cars.

Spend a year travelling the world and the old Defender will make it all the way and be worth more when you get home. The new Defender probably wouldn't make it without an accompanying team of modern mechanics and will have depreciated when you get home.

By the time you had finished setting all the electronics for each task uphill downhill etc the old defender would have done the task and it won’t have cost a small fortune for the privilege.

My 300tdi defender would smack that new defender's backside so hardd!!

I wonder what the stats are on Old Defender owners trading "up" to the new one? Maybe D4 drivers trading sideways . I have both and my TD5 Defender is a great cart for sleeping on the beach. Lightweight , bigger and airier in the back where we sleep and i hose it out when i get home. Long trip on tar there is no comparison and thats where the new one will get new defender owners.

The new one is almost like every other faceless ugly Suv. Feels like the new one was ruined with its looks. The old one looks more authentic

For the price and the advancement in technology I wouldn’t expect it to be the worse out of the two cars. If it was it would be embarrassing. Saying that I think the old one would last longer if you were doing this driving everyday.

I'd rather get 1983-1991 Land Rover Defender 110 cuz its just better in every way , it can be for family type , it can be either camping , overlander or rv travelling its just better not to mention its best for manuals stuff , having lazy tech its just a joke lol and only stupid people buy new modern stuff which 70% of you do and thats just emberrasing xD

And frankly, it goes astonishingly good. I mean if you can relax on such descent and stuff it WILL GO further. Driver and passenger fatigue is the biggest issue in offroad.
