What is the difference between a modem and a router (and a gateway)?

I have Optimum Cable amd it's horrible. What do you suggest I do with the Gateway provided? Can I connect a new router to it or should I purchase my own separate modem/ router which is compatible with my ISP??

I have a gateway from my internet provider, I'm having issues with the wifi, I have a TV, Ps4 and Sonos sound system connected directly to the gateway, and the technicians say that's the reason of the bad performance of the Wifi. Great video. I’m having trouble with my new work laptop. It keeps dropping WiFi connection about ever 15 mins. After a few mins it comes back up. I have a gateway that is in the basement and service has always been a little weak on the main floor and especially the second floor. Should I have my cable provider come out and move it to the main floor, should I get a router to go with it? Any suggestions are greatly welcomed.
