Possible one of the more subjective RANKED lists we've ever done! We don't reckon ANYBODY has reasonable grounds to disagree with Preston's placement, but sound off in the replies about who your favourite wasteland companion is!

And every last one of them is better than companions in Starfield!

Fallout 3 Dogmeat was one of 3 bugged companions on the Xbox360 release alongside Fawkes and Charon.
What was the bug?
INSANELY BLOATED HP AND HP REGENERATION.
These three could, at max level, tank hits from the Experimental MIRV and still be over 50% HP in most cases. It made them practically immortal to anything that didn't just instantly kill them.

You do not need to keep Neutral Karma to keep RL-3, you need it to purchase him. However after purchasing him he behaves much like dogmeat and has no reaction to your karma choices. My current playthrough Fallout 3 character has gone from Neutral buying RL-3, to Evil to Good and he's still a companion.

Preston's character is completely ruined by the fact that Bethesda attached that horrible radiant quest to him. If you use a mods that slows down or even removes that he's actually one of the better companions. His voice acting is really good, he's one of the best fighters thanks to his stats, and his reactions to quests are some of the most relatable.
I remember finding a day care center in the basement of a derelict church that had a crib and a bunch of scattered toys laying around, i was kind of bothered by the idea of looting the area after that so i decided to leave it alone and go somewhere else. A few second later Preston catches up and says a few lines about how sad it was that the little day care center would probably never have playing kids in it again and i just had one of those moments where i was like "damn man, i was just thinking the exact same thing".
They really gave Preston allot of human moments like that and then completely ruined it by turning him into a unwelcomed quest dispenser.

Honestly, I like Curie. Mostly because of the cute attitude, and she is smart as heck! (or at lest was when she was a robot)
