Why (on an molecular level) is it such a localized changed, and why is the change a sudden one. Given what I know now on a molecular level, it seems like liquids should gradually changed to a gas like a supercritical fluid.

The temperature at which a liquid starts boiling at atmospheric pressure is called boiling

so why do bubbles form on only certain parts of the pot/glass?

i thought the heat of the container surface expands to the point of letting air through

I made a discovery a couple weeks ago. We all think that the bubbles formed from boiling water, or any liquid are created from expanding gases, or water vapor etc. Sorry to say, but your all totally wrong. These bubbles that are formed from boiling don't contain anything. They are bubbles of vacuum!!! Maybe I can win a Nobel Prize in physics for this discovery. This is a perfect example of how wrong science can be on certain topics. Just to show you, how wrong we are on things that we think are facts, and once we believe in the incorrect fact, all science from that point on is wrong. Like how we think the universe is expanding because of the discovery of the Red Shift Effect by E. Hubble. Sorry again, but the universe isn't expanding, because the Red Shift was misinterpreted. So how wrong are we with things? Could the atomic model be wrong for example? Are elements made from these protons and electrons? Could be, but isn't a fact. Here is another fact that we all been told, and is the reason for the belief in Black holes. That if planets are too big they would turn into stars, but this is another misconception. Planets are what black holes are, and that missing matter that we can't see, called dark matter. it's exactly that physical matter, nothing complex. We just can't see it, because it doesn't give off light. How freaking hard is this? Are people really that unintelligent? While the government spends billions of dollars trying to figure out what dark matter is, or dark energy, because if the universe isn't expanding, and is not speeding up in expansion, there is no foundation for dark energy to exist. Yes, gas does cause the bubbling in water, it was just a joke, but what is strange, is that in order for a gas to expand or to compress. A vacuum would have to exist within a gas. When the gases expand in water, a vacuum is created because of the gas, but yes it's a vacuum, and yes it's also gas.
