Regula Chronicles: British passport, 2020
Considering the current unsettling situation in the world, we’d like to brighten up your day a little by giving a glimpse of the new British passport in this #RegulaChronicles.
One of the most noticeable features of this e-passport is its cover, which has changed its color back from burgundy red to dark blue after nearly 30 years.
Speaking of the polycarbonate data page, let’s differentiate between the front (title page) and back (bio-data page) sides of it. In total there are 5 holder’s portraits in this document, with 4 of them included within the data page. One of the portraits is hidden in the chip, integrated into the structure of the data page. Two portraits are located on the bio-data page. One of them is a primary holder’s black-and-white portrait. The other, being a part of the MLI, interchanges with the holder’s personal data when the passport is tilted. The title page incorporates a secondary holder’s image applied by laser engraving. An exquisite feature of the data page is a transparent window with an integrated decoding lens. When the lens is put over the 5th and final holder’s portrait on page 3, it makes the invisible personal data visible.
Moreover, when the title page is tilted, you may notice four floral symbols of the UK countries (Tudor rose, Thistle, Shamrock and Daffodil) starting to pulsate. The theme of the UK’s floral symbols also repeats in UV as a true color UV image. In our humble opinion, it is the most picturesque UV printing in this document.
Finally, the inside back cover portrays the UK contours performed with moiré effect printing, which starts to shimmer when tilted.
