Everyone's talking about how the army has no excuse if the group of 5-6 armed men can stall a horde that long. Well, there's plenty of excuses...

1. Those guys are immune to the airborne strand of virus, so a very small percentage of population. All military personnel are not immune.

2. Ethics. If zombies appeared in real world, nobody would shoot them outright in the first days, or even weeks of the infection because they're still considered human. It would basically be like unloading at a bunch of angry civilians. Add that to the previous point and imagine that you're at an early military outpost, and half of your squad turns and tries to eat you. Chances are you'd try to reason with them first, or subdue them with non-lethal means, even if you consumed a bunch of zombie media and know exactly why it's a bad idea since, well... you're in this situation now, and those are your friends which you think may still be saved.

3. Holding outposts/supply line issue. Even if there's still a command structure for your military organization after 80-90% of the world has turned, here's where the real problem starts. You need a lot of men to maintain supply lines, men who would rather take those supplies to themselves if SHTF. Even if you have enough ammo, which is a big IF, the more you shoot the more zombies you attract, and you need even more ammo than that previous enough.

4. Societal collapse. Money doesn't mean a thing anymore. There's pretty much no production of MRE's either. Why would you stay in the army and not dessert, as a soldier yourself? It's a lost cause -- both your military commanders and your country's leader(s) are probably long gone, if not dead then caring about their own ass, not yours. If we also take TWD virus in which all corpses are turned... imagine what will happen at both regular hospitals and field ones, where nobody is prepared for that type of shit. You can have a functioning military at state level only IF the society still functions overall, and if all corpses turn, well... Your military boys ain't gonna do much for every single city in your damn country.

Overall, if you think about it it does make sense why small groups of immune survivors are more effective in the event of a zombie apocalypse than a whole ass country's military. The most realistic scenario is that the command structure collapses, but some military installations still function... but there's a good chance they'll be raiders instead of your puppy eyed survivors because to survive they needed to kill off most of their friends, and the trauma of that won't ever go away not only on individual level, but also on collective level. Even if they don't become bandits, they'll only care about themselves. In long-term some may form new nations through sweat and blood, but that wouldn't be your nation anymore no matter what they become.
