This is the video I needed when I was choosing uni courses (and I will be recommending it when I do careers events from now on!). Fortunately I came out the other side enjoying being an architect, at least most of the time! But I do have a couple of other ideas on transferrable skills to throw into the mix... Legal stuff: we have to know a certain amount to qualify, and you can progress this into expert witnessing or construction law (with a bit more training I imagine!). And game design: without assuming we can do this better than trained games designers, I reckon there's a lot of 'world building' skills that would be applicable to the (massive UK) games industry.

I´m in my first year of being a junior architect, and I´m so underwhelmed unfortunately. It´s been anti-climatic. (and I wanted to be an architect since grade 6, school was great but work...?). My goal is to be a full time artist on the long term. This video is perfect thank you!

Freshman class is 100. You graduate with 25, 75% failure rate. Out of the 25 that graduate less than half get their license. Of the registered architects, many get the hell out of this profession. I have been in business for 36 years, registered architect for 44 years. My main goal as an architect was to make a profit, and go as fast I could possibly go. I did not dilly dally over the design of the front door. I did not spend 90% of the fee on design. I soon realized most people don’t care what the building looks like, only architects care. The BIGGEST problem with architecture is it too tied to the economy. No money to spend no need for an architect. There are other ways to make a living. One other problem is most see an architect as a draftsman who makes blue prints. You better be in the top 5 of your class or get out ASAP.

You suck as an architect that’s why you say that. I bet you’re not creative at all. In order to be a great architect you need to have knowledge and an imagination. But you clearly lack that. And I bet the stuff you design already sucks.

Hello! I graduated from architecture this year and the industry is simply not for me. I love your video and 100% agree with your point about architecture setting our artistry apart. I'm really glad I learned the concepts and theories about space/circulation/structure, developing a good "architectural eye" and being capable to see my day to day life differently and artistically. Much love, and I appreciate seeing videos as honest as this one.

As someone with a background in social sciences, a couple of degrees and various diplomas in psych/health orientated areas, the fact I've chosen to do colouring in for a living sometimes causes a little war in my brain about what I SHOULD be doing with my studies. This video really helped me be okay with choosing my artist path, I noticed that I was picking projects/commissions that allowed me to tie in elements of my qualifications and the core values I'd developed along the way. I can use my art to really focus in on issues such as accessibility, inclusion and awareness in a way that the typical psych role just doesn't allow for. Thank you Hanna!

What would you do if you weren't an architect? (Ps sorry about the lighting in this. I've got 'buy blind' on my shopping list)
